the defroster is only designed to heat up when electricity flows through it, not pick up radio signals.

Hmm, still not convinced it wouldn't work though. Maybe the high resistance of the wire would cause issues, but not sure.

I've seen those internal antennas before, but not sure where. I need one myself, hear they work great...

Many cars have antennas in windows. GM put a lot of 'em in windshields until insurance companies began complaining about the high cost due to frequent replacement from stone cracks. Chrysler puts 'em in the rear quarter windows and rear windows -- better protection from stones. These antennas do give you a smooth look, but the reception sucks. Even the best window mounted antennas are nowhere near as good as a real mast-style unit. To give you an idea, I can pick up about twice as many clear FM stations with a mast antenna as I could with my quarter window-mounted version -- same radio head unit, same reception area.

I got great reception (even in the hardy northern woods of the Upper Peninsula) and even had a helluva a hackjob so I could use that antenna, because I think you had to pay mor eso they'd connect a little connector to the antenna, but the connector was already there, or something... It'd right in the middle of the windshield, and is a little loop, sort of.

What I would like, is an antenna in the window cling material, that I could put in the back, or top of my windshield, or wherever I like.

Couldn't understand the rest.

If you think you got good reception, either you have the world's best glass-mounted antenna, or you don't know how much better your reception could be with a "real" antenna. From a forum on antennas:

"In-glass antennas have never been noted for their good
performance. They are only popular because they are
easier for the auto manufacturers (and car washes). Many
people add a proper antenna after-market when they are
stuck with these things."

If you want one, go for it. Since you already have a glass-mount you probably won't notice any difference.

Maybe I just live in an area with lots of powerful radio stations... FWIW, the in-glass one has better reception than any of my other vehicles, but I'm sure my head unit plays a role in this, as well.

The way I figure it, if you're using a radio, you're not really supposed to complain about the signal or reception because it can change on a dime. Audiophiles should use CDs, not megahertz.

I dunno. My Audi always got outstanding reception with it's window antenna. But it actually has one in the front windshield and one in the rear window or maybe the quarter window (I forget which now)...

The current mast antenna on my 7 sucks for reception, and its like the fourth one I've tried. Even replaced the radio itself and get shitty reception. Maybe one of these days I'll actually solve this annoying problem...
