Conversion to rack and pinion
I know that it is posible. Didn't the millen Is gen rally cars have rack and pinion. (not to mention 4 wheel drive)
I was drifting in my 7 the other day and It was a pain in the *** to correct with the slow *** steering. I almost put my car into the gardrail
I found a 91 miata in the local yard the other day. This steering system seems perfect.
Has anyone done this conversion. I doesn't seem too comlicated if you could find the right setup to put in there.

Yeah, it doesn't seem like the day time crew here has done it. I would see what the night time shift has to say.

all you...I say go for it. I'm also sick of the slow steering.
Wouldn't be easier to just add Power steering? It has a faster Ratio than the Non-Power Steering ones.
You could change that over, and it would be a bolt in project, instead of the...
"oh ****!, what did I do to my car!" project.

I have a rack conversion brewing in the back of my mind.... It don't be pretty though, probably will require a new oil pan, and definitely will require the P/S steering column. But it should be pretty neat.

powersteering sucks power too. What about moving inward on the spindle, the point at which the steering arm ataches. wouldn't that speed up the steering.
I am also starting to get used to drifting with the slow steering. Althought it is not nearly as easy as with a miata.

If you don't want the assisted steering. Switch out the rack to a "power" one and add a catch can. This way you can bypass the pump altogether, and it will still be kept lubricated.
That way you have the faster steering, and no power loss.

man, try doing this in a race car.. only good thing about having the race car is that I don't drive it every day and we work on it all the time, so adjusting the steering every once in a while isn't so bad..

All you need is a tube that goes from one hole to the other.

With the catch can you could refill/replace the fluid without letting air in the system, and since you have much more times the volume of fluid, it will cool more between uses, and need to be replaced less.
good idea man. how much are those? i cant read the stupid ad. have you done this yet? are there any pages youve found with more info on it, i tried google and found stupid sites about how to change your fluid

I really dislike the first gen slop-o-steering, fix it, its tight goes loose, fix it, slop it.
I'd pay $500 for a bolt in Rack system, then the only other gripe i'd have with the car is those 5 foot headlights stickin up, hehe

I used to adjust my steering box. It would stay adjusted for awhile, then get sloppy again. Downward sprial until it had 2" of play and no more to adjust. Best think I did was get a good one from the junkyard out of a low mileage car, install it, and NEVER adjust it again. Working great after 5 years as daily driver 20,000mi a year, and 2 years of track only use.

I have a 96miata and an 85se7 and I am always asking myself which one is faster cause it is so close. But the miata steers like a dream, fast, responsive, and easily, while the 7 only inspires taking up weight lifting and advanced karate steering. I don't belive my steering setup to be damaged like many threads talk about, but I do believe there is something that may be loose AGAIN and either way, it's never very impressive.
I have read posts on this board about people swapping out first gen steering and it was far more than $500. I seem to recall close to $1700 and it wasn't all he had hoped for.
Uh...
Rack and Pinion steering isn't all that bad. I learned how to drive with power steering, and then bought a non-p/s car...
It's no big deal, just learn when it's gonna go loose and when it'll be tight. And learn to swing the *** end of your car around those corners. That's what they made it for!
