sometimes all you need is a socket and power bar (but hold your hand over the joint, pressing towards the steering whell as you spin the hub nut off, or the steering shaft spring might kick the socket back into your chin when the nut releases)

if I remember corectly you cant get just the lights switch you have to replace the whole thing (I have the same problem) and be sure to use a puller other wise you will damage the telescopeing steering shaft (ask me how I know)

Ah geez...I just threw one of those turn signals out...doh! Once you pull the steering wheel, there's a clamp with a screw on the underside of the turn signal. Loosen the screw, unplug the connectors and slide that sucker off.
By the way, I had the same problem with my high-beams. Turned out the contacts were dirty so I just sprayed them down with contact cleaner. If you don't have some contact cleaner, stop by Graybar (electrical supplier) and get some for around $8. It pays off...BIG TIME

Mine didnt work on the 85 GSL and I got pissed one night and just kept flipping the lever back and forth really fast cussing and ranting for about 30 seconds and they started working all by themselves . Theyve never failed me since . They always just worked on my 83 though .

By flipping the switch, you probably "cleaned" the contacts enough so current could flow. I've had both an 83 and an 85 high/low beam switch apart and the only difference that I see is the coloring of the plastic casing.

Got Boost?
Just curious, which contacts are usually dirty.... I've noticed that somtimes mine work, and sometimes not... Is it the connector, or the actual contacts.... and if its the switch contacts how do you spray it without taking the switch apart (ie. pull the wheel). I'd like to 'fix' this, without use of excessive force, if you know what I mean...

Contact cleaner usually comes with a little straw attachment like WD-40 or brake cleaner does... you stick the straw in the steering column right by the signal arm, and spray the copper contacts at the base of the arm (armpit?) clean
