Confused about street headers

Confused about street headers

I just a bonez cat for my 1985 12a and I am now in the search of a header to mate up with it. If I understand correctly, pacesetter and mindtrain are my only options. I can't find any good info on the mindtrain parts though. It sounds like there are different stages but i can't find a good description anywhere. I need to pass CA smog if that makes any difference.

If anyone has a breakdown fo the stages and some pics that would be awesome.

Ok so forget about all the Pacesetter/Monza crap and look at Racing Beat

Racing Beat is pritty much the only Headder any one uses.

There is some support for the Mindtrain set up but I personally know very little on the product.

The problem with Racing Beat is hooking it up to a cat to pass smog.

nazthug: If you do manage to pass smog with that cat, take it off RIGHT AWAY. The hotter exhaust of a rotary engine will eat right through that aftermarket cat, within a year it'll be junk, and you'll need another one to pass your next smog.

RacingBeat makes the best performance exhaust, but it does *nothing* for emissions. Trying to setup a header and a cat isn't your best bet. Try to get the original exhaust manifold and 3-cat system off a junker (make sure the inside of the cats are in good order). Then make sure your ACV (air control valve) is working properly and pumping air to the main cats like it's supposed to. As long as the ACV is pumping air, your cats are good, and your car is in tune, you'll pass emissions fine.

RacingBeat and Mazdatrix are both based in Cali, so if you e-mail or call (calling's better) them, they would probably be able to give you better advice on passing smog with aftermarket stuff. Alot of people I've seen on here though buy standard piston-engine cats, which can't stand the heat or the different composition of our exhaust and break down.

I searched extensively on mindtrain products and I cant even find a pic anywhere on the forum.

Here is a quote from RP's site, "The Bönez Performance Converter Exhaust Systems utilize an ultra high temperature, high flow catalytic converter that has been specifically designed to handle the high exhaust temperatures the rotary engine produces."

I thought the bonez cat was better equipoped top handle the higher EGT's?

I am trying to figure out all of the different versions mindtrain offers. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Mazdatrix has a little blurb about passing emissions on their website. I don't live in Cali so I con't help you there.
I'm not following what viper is talking about as far as burning up the cat. As long as you have fresh air piped to the cat, it will live. The Bonez is generally reguarded as one of the best cats out there. Powerwise, there is nothing wrong with a highflow. It costs you a couple hp over a straight pipe, but not not a significant amount.
Doesn't the Bonez extend to the stock manifold? If so, you have a minor problem as the header extend down to where the stock main cat connects.

Right there being in Cali, you will not pass the visual test part with headers... unless you know the smog technician and can get away with it. Do you have to go to a Test center Only?
A catalyst can be mated up to headers, typically by a custom job.
No junk yard in CA can legally sell you a catalyst.. they are usually destroyed there.
Stick with the stock exhaust manifold and the Bonez Cat that you already have.. a CARB legal one being the surest bet.. Yes RP does share its claims with their product. http://www.rx7.com/cgi-local/2catalo...cat=4&part=120 (yes its a page for FCs) Longevity depends usually of the condition of your engine and how the car is driven, so noone can really say...the same applies towards stock cats as well. Mark P has the Bonez Cat system on his daily driven ReX and they work fine.
Go with a full headered system after you pass smog if you want.
