compression test an engine thats not in car

anyway to do this other than listen for the 6 pulses?
technically couldnt i just bolt the tranny and starter back up and strap it down really well?

Yes. You don't need to strap it down at all. I have done this before. Just hook up a battery with the positive cable to the starter and put the ground thru the starter mounting bolt.
