Exclamation Compartment Rust

For those of you who had severe compartment rust - how did you fix it? Did you cut the rusted metal out and weld something in? TIA.

Ok, for those of you who welded something - what type of metal did you use?

My fix for rust is simple.

1) drive to a body shop
2) point out rusted areas
3) come back in a few days and pay 'em.

Every shop in town here will - they cut out the cancered metal and weld in new stuff bent to match.

We're less litigious up here so body shops aren't tied up by all sorts of liability issues. If they screw up they take responsibility, but they aren't prevented from doing it IN CASE they screw up as many Cali shops are

Same thing here in Tennessee. Body shop cut out my 2 rusted out wheel wells, welded in new metal, I think from a ford hood!

I'm about to get a little rust blister removed from just behind the right rear wheel. Main expense is the paint and blending, so it'll run about $300 normally.

HOWEVER

I got rear-ended last month. No real damage but my insurance co. wants them to heat my rear bumper (brand new - installed after a rear-ending the month before) and pull it straight, then repaint. Since they're mixing the paint anyhow they'll chop out the rust and weld in clean metal, prime, and paint for $100.

Both broad daylight. The first was one dude who figured "young boyband-member lookin' guy in a sports car MUST be about to run that yellow-turning-red, so I'll floor it too..."

Second was a 16 year old, 3 months into his license, who was busy watching the cop who had just passed him going the other way. I had stopped in the left lane about to turn left, and... well, I get inexpensive interior and touchup paint and a free car rental for a few days. I'm slipping my car over to another garage to have the RB swaybars installed while driving the rental
