Question Was this a common trick? Coolant seal repair from outside the block.

Well I have a 82 GSL parts car. Im using it for the rear end and some misc parts for a friends first gen. I pulled the motor today and since day one I had noticed this "goo" between the front rotor housing and front iron. Its almost like JBWELD, and it looks like someone was using it to repair a leak mabey? Its just piled thick on there, like it was applied with a caulking gun. Anyone else seen this??
The front rotor is perfect, the rear..... well...... completly lost a apex seal.

I can get some pictures if it helps. I am going to combine this and my friends spare 12a into a bridgeported 12a with a holly/rb intake and headers for a track car .

I have seen this before where the person was trying to stop an oil leak, but it looks like they where trying to stop a little more than oil.

I think that's a repair to stop the oil seals from leaking. My 84 GSL had a similar repair (but not as extensive) before I got the car at 100,000 miles and now, three years and 36,000 miles later, it's still doing fine. I did have a bit of oil leaking around the seal when I got the car, and again after I let it sit for a year without driving it, but both times I was able to stop the leak by adding "Engine Oil Stop Leak" with each oil change. This treatment probably softens up and expands the gaskets, stopping the leaks. Maybe not acceptable to you guys who like to paint your engines different colors and look at your cars more than you drive them, but it's sure a lot less expensive than rebuilding an engine, especially one that's running just fine otherwise.

Be careful with mixing different year parts . Its best to keep moving part all from same yr. unless you know what you are doing. Repost or e-mail if you need more info

Oh I know all the iron/waterpassage way/water seal differences. My friends motor is a 85, this is a 82, there shouldnt be any issues.

Now how do you know? What if it works? If it keeps the oil in it's way better than a rebuild. Not that I want to take any business away from anyone.

It lost the rear apex seal.... so who cares about rebuild :p.

Na I get what you are saying. I am going to chip it away.

The 82 and the 85 have different weight on the rotors. You will probably have to get them rebalanced. In addition, the rotor faces have letters on them, I believe that these determine if they will be compatible with each other...not sure on how to interperate them though. You could have them balanced though...

i've had a 7 like that i think. can't see no pics, but i got a good visual. it was on the rear middle. looked like jb weld gooed on there. i figured it was to stop the dreaded oil leak. it did if thats what it was. must be an oldtimers way of keeping the engine. getto? yes. effective? yes. ugly? yes. who cares? not me.
