Coil voltage question

After exhausting my google fu and club searching, i am unable to find the voltage of the stock coils for a 85 gsl. I nabbed two MSD blaster 2 8202's for the best price, and am curious to know if they're better, or just something i should keep as spares. If it's something i wouldn't notice a difference on I'd just as soon not use them.

IIRC the stock Diamond coils are 12-15k, but they are also 25years old by now so something newer is probably going to work as good if not better.

I'm surprised, i figured the stock's would be higher than that. I'll have to give the MSD's a shot, then.

also, what are the brand name of stock coils? both of mine have been painted - so I'm only assuming they're stock.they're black underneath the bright *** blue paint.

Sad to have to be the one to point this out, but Blaster 8202's are not recommended for horizontal mount, since they are oil-filled and not potted; instructions call for vertical mounting.

8222's are for horizontal mount.

on my stock motor, I felt the change to MSD coils over stock. Like stated above, the stock coils are most likely worn out. Swap yours out and see if you like it, it only take about 15 min.

good to know they should be vertical mount. I'll see if i can find a good way to mount them vertical. I'd have never known or realized that, lol.

Somebody long ago made a nifty little triangular bracket that held 3 coils in a vertical position and bolted to the drivers strut tower. I remember it from the heyday of DLIDFIS

Almost any newer technology coil will be a big win with these cars ignition systems.

I used the 2G coil for awhile before my igniters started acting up. Then I went HEI to
replace the igniters and Ford TFI coils to replace the 2G coil. Works like a champ
and haven't had an issue since doing it. Its a wasted spark setup as well so I
don't use trailing anymore. I also don't use the vacuum advance because its that
much better even at low rpms. This should all be true for the setup your about to
make as well. You won't be disappointed at all.

I'll keep that in mind, I'll poke around with the vaccuum advance also and see if there's a difference.
