Clutch Recomendations

Hey, I did a search, but did not find what I was looking for. My clutch is starting to go, and I will probably end up replacing it this fall. I was looking for a recomendation as to what replacement to get. I am looking for a clutch that is higher performance than stock, but nothing too extreme. If anybody can point me in the direction of a good kit I would appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

i got a cheapo OEM clutch off ebay. cant really see why you'd want a performance clutch on these cars without massive upgrades, the OEM holds great at even moderately upgraded status.

The centerforce dual friction might be more than I will ever need, but the Centerforce II looks pretty nice. Does anybody have any experience with this clutch or any others. Also, what other suggestions can you give me as to what to do while the tranny is out to replace it. I was thinking along the lines of a ligher flywheel. Thanks for all of the help so far. Keep it coming.

FB II and Alex-7, what kind of horsepower are you guys running? From the description on the centerforce website, that looks like a pretty serious clutch. Thanks and keep the suggestions coming.

I love mine three, but it's still attached to the '79 RPstreetport 12A on a rolling cart...waiting for the day when the stock 12A in the '83 gives up the ghost....

Go with the six puck sprung center with a RB pressure plate. I have that set up in my bone stock 12a.

yea the centerforce dual friction is perfect for stock up to a mild turbo setup. if you're even thinking of driving this car hard might as well step up. i got my whole CFDF kit for 200 bucks brand new from the local performance shop.

Would the clutch kit from Victoria British be any good for a completely stock '81 FB? It is the cheapest I have found ($129.95). I would love to be able to get by this cheap...if it is suitable. Any advice would be appreciated. I would like to be able to order something as soon as Monday.

I am assuming the clutch is my problem. The car shakes violently when I pull out. My mechanic said the flywheel was cracked, and he replaced it. This didn't help the problem. I figure it must be the clutch. If anybody thinks it could be something else, please let me have your opinion.

Thanks

cfdfis a mild upgrade. It's an excellent clutch thoug just mild. not the best for much more than 150 to the wheels... IMHO I had one on my jetta putting 140whp and it lost its thrill after about 8k. It was exactly like driving a broke down stock clutch....

I dropped in a racing beat street/strip clutch and it's nice. Grips real good, fairly heavy pedal. It was an alternative to the ACT which was pretty pricey. I'm not a big fan of the CF clutches. I've had a few friends with TII's and they just ate those clutches up within 6 months. They're good drivers, just not a "quality" product IMHO.

My high quality Center Force Dual Friction clutch has outlasted several cars and three engines....the last engine came out of the totaled '80 with the tranny still hooked up and it sits on a carriage in my garage today. On top of massive street abuse, that clutch was subjected to 20+ passes of 4500 rpm drop clutch starts with Dunlop 225/50/15 rears on the Kennedale 1/8th mile track in a single 2 1/2 hour period and I never smelled clutch anytime during that night of racing....

First person experience, not hearsay or "my friend's friend who is a tuner sez..."

Wonderful product, clutch pedal effort doesn't increase notably so the clutch hydraulics aren't strained beyond their design limits. I highly recommend Center Force to any and everyone with a modded engine....
