Unhappy Clutch Q_q

so my 20 year old clutch is starting to go bad...when i start the car and put it into reverse...theres a loud grinding noise followed by a loud "clank" that sounds like something is breaking and it finally shifts into gear....it is VERY difficult for me to shift it back into first....then one day i put it into reverse and i think the loud clank might have actually broke something...i can no longer shift into any other gears besides reverse so i push the car back into its spot..and now, when i step on the clutch...it wont go back up -_-....im pretty sure the clutch "broke" because it was already pretty soft when i got it...

o and one more thing..after it broke and i shift it into reverse, it would automatically reverse without me depressing the clutch or stepping on the gas

i needed a new clutch anyway....do u guys have any suggestions on a new clutch..which ones are good and what are the price ranges?

1985 gsl-se....stock...straight piped :X

Someone has a genuine res racer RX-7? ZOMG!

Were the noises coming from the front or the rear?

I had some weird noises too. I found out my pressure plate had glazed past its use and there was alot of clutch chatter (the clutch hopping on the pressure plate). Also check your U joints on your driveshaft. That caused one of the noises for me and it only happened it reverse.

Now for a clutch...I went with Exedy and I had it shipped to my house in 4 business days so If you are in need of something soon, check it out here: http://www.mazdatrix.com/f86-92nt.htm

Also http://www.racingbeat.com/FRmazda1.htm
sells clutches and ships quickly. They also give you more options if you want to upgrade to a 4 puck or whatnot. Make sure to NOT GET A TURBO II CLUTCH!!!!! IT WILL NOT FIT

Good luck!

the noises were coming straight from the transmission

at this point, i would pull the trans, replace the clutch, replace the trans, replace or rebuild the clutch master and slave cylinder, and replace the clutch hose. finally i would check te clutch pedal adjustment and measure the free play and take up.

Shifter should move freely between gears when the car is parked, engine off, clutch in any position. If it doesn't, it's the tranny. Start with pulling the shifter to see if it has failed/jammed. If not then the tranny needs to come out. With the clutch pedal not returning, replace the slave, master and rubber line.

I agree with trochoid, If the pedal doesn't come off the floor its the hydraulics. I'm not saying the clutch doesn't need replaced, but what happened to you is the hydraulics failing and allowing the clutch to engage slightly even when you have the pedal on the floor. I replaced the entire clutch hydraulics in mine when i got it one day and the pedal fell to the floor and it completely fixed the problem. I got the master cylinder, slave cylinder, and flexible hose for about 75 bucks from black dragon automotive (formerly victoria british) Good luck!

i agree with fixing the hydraulics. I had to twice since Ive owned mine. definitely worth makes a difference. Also you might want to change your lubrication in both your tranny and diff. Royal purple makes a difference for me...much smoother and worth it.

No need to pull the shifter since the tranny is shifting fine with the engine off. I always remove the shifter before pulling the tranny anyway.
