Clutch problem

Having a problem with my Dad's 85 GS. Started a short time after he changed the gear lube in the tranny (5 speed). Not sure if it could be related as its different fluid. We've done this before without causing problems.

After he drives a short distance the clutch will not work and stays close to the floor and slowly returns. If you pump it a number of times it works for awhile. We have notied bubbles when checking the fluid level for the clutch. When pumping the clutch I do notice more small bubbles.

Try bleeding the clutch, if the problem persist then you should put in new clutch master & slave cylinder and new line.

Bubbles indicate a leak in the system somewhere. If it's not coming from the bleeder, replace all of it, master, slave and hose, and be done with it for the next 15 years. Well worth the 100 bucks or so in parts for the peace of mind.

Go with replacing all of it. I did that with my setup, much better feel. The parts should be easy to come by, but count on having an auto parts store having to special order them. Try to avoid buying from Auto Zone. Spent only $50 from them but the stuff was junk. Both items leaked. So, I went to Olympus Auto Parts (probably a local chain for me, I don't know) and spent about $80 and haven't had a problem since. Try to find a place that specializes in import parts. The stuff I got from Olympus were made by Tokico, versus some generic maker from Auto Zone. Big difference in what they looked like, too!

Replace both at the same time. Be ready to have very cramped hands and alot of cursing. Getting your hands up there to do a few million1/4 turns to get the nuts off.

As an additional side note, take care when installing the slave bolts in the tranny. They tend to strip out the aluminum threads in the bell housing easily. I've had to drop a tranny and retap for a larger bolt because of this.

And those bolts are even harder to get at due to the beehive oil thingy.
After removing my beehive, I discovered someone had used trochoid's fix for the stripped bolt hole.
