I searched and after like 6 pages deciced to just ask since I couldn't find a straight answer.
I'm mating a 82 motor to a 79 5spd tranny. Do I need a clutch for a 79 or a cluth for an 82?

Use the clutch that matches the flywheel.

Make sure to use the flywheel for the 82 motor and rotaing assemby. The 79-80 flywheel is 30 lbs and the 81-82 flywheel is 23 lbs. Using the wrong flywheel will cause the engine rotating assemby to be unbalanced. Check out this reference from Mazdatrix. The clutch is the same for either year (215 mm)

Im not sure but dont you need a 79-80 throw out bearing (assuming you're replacing that too)?

They are the same as is the starter as is the Clutch set up.

As it has been covered extensively the only concern is mating the rotating assembly to the year of engine.
