Clutch Compatibility Question... real quick.
So my rear end swap is planned for next weekend (not this one coming up, this weekend i'm goin to Canada to get the rear). So while the rear is out, and the d-shaft is dropped, i'm going to throw in one of the 5spd's i have to replace my crappy 4spd. To add to that, while the 4spd is out, i'd like to replace my crap clutch (**** slips like crazy in the upper rev range). I'm thinking either an ACT from www.pitstopautoparts.com, or a Centerforce DF (more expensive)... or a RB S/D HD Disc w/ either a Race PP or S/S PP.
i have a 225mm Clutch on my 12a now (its an 83 motor in an '80 Chassis) and in the future, i'll be throwing in a 13b and turbocharging it.
Question: Is the 255mm 12a Clutch the same as the 13b non-turbo clutch? So if i buy a clutch now, i can use it on my 13b later? I think it is the same, but i want to check.
thanks, Kurt.

It's not the *same*. The 13B's used different materials/pressure plate strength. But you can interchange. (I believe GSL-SE is different from S4 is different from S5, and the RX-8 is probably yet another variation)
'74-78 13Bs had the 215mm clutches, except for the REPU which was weirdball.

so if i get a 225mm Centerforce DF, it'll bolt to my 12a for now, and then bolt to my 13b later on? Sweet
what do you think of using a S/S HD disc and a Race PP from RB? Too much pedal effort?

Wouldn't know, haven't used them.
My feelings on pedal effort: With the S5 pressure plate I have now, it feels way light. Stock 12A clutches feel stupidly light.
Then I get into a modern car, and it feels like the clutch pedal isn't attached to anything. Just *thud* to the floor.
The only time I actually use my *leg* to work the clutch instead of just flicking my left ankle, is when I get to drive some drag racing beast with a B&B type clutch. Those often feel more like a brake pedal. Now, *that's* a clutch!
In short, don't worry about how the clutch feels to your leg. Worry about how it affects performance. Too much clutch is often worse than not enough - you want the clutch to slip a bit on a launch, since it is far better than the alternative, which is tire slip.

yeah, but i dont want something with light pedal effort... i ******* HATE new car clutches...
it feels like stepping on a sponge, IMO.
I guess anything new would have as much effort or slightly more than my stock clutch, which is the cut-off IMO for any accptable clutch effort in terms of too-light.
ugh, i HATE light clutches.

i found this site, clutchnet.com, to be informative in the area of what other cars use the same clutch disk as the one i'm using on my '74 13b. i have the street/strip disk and pp from RB, the pedal pressure is just right, i think. not too light and not too heavy. definately better than stock.
