clunk sound when shifting into 2nd

Sometimes when shifting into second i'll get a clunk when it goes in. It's only second gear, and it's not grinding. It only happens when im shifting fast into second. It goes in smooth if i'm just granny shifting though. Something to worry about? What do you guys think it is? I'm pretty sure I need a new pilot and throwout bearing, cause when idling sometimes it makes that one noise then stops when the clutch is depressed. Could that be part of the problem? I also have a 4 puck racing clutch. God bless

Sounds like you have worn synchro's on second gear... Very common problem.

You can either change the Gear Box oil to a good sythenic like AmsOil or make up a batch of half Auto Trans Fluid/Half Gear Box Oil. It's worked for many over the years and has helped my gearbox which is very very tired

Meanwhile practice double declutching.

I have to change my tranny fluid soon too. I've tried that auto and gear oil method before and works great. I'll change it out soon and see what happens. I'll practice the shifting too. Thanks.

Pilot bearing. Little tiny bit of noise should be normal.

Yep. Kerplunk equals bad news. If you hear a kerplunk, that means your tranny fell out when you were crossing that bridge and landed in the river below.

i've got a very similar noise except its just really bad, like everywhere. but i own an fc. i've not bothered to change my pilot bearing as i hear its a pita without that special tool. do you really think it could be a pilot bearing? im pretty positive my input shaft is the culprit and was thinking of just dropping in another tranny in there bc the noise is driving me crazy. i dont want to go get another tranny if its only a pilot bearing. thanks.

^^There's a 2nd gen forum you know right? Well, I have had the tranny fall out of place before. The tranny mount bolt on the exhaust side fell out once and my complete tranny tilted towards the exhaust. I would have to hold the tranny in 2nd, 4th, and 5th gears for it not to pop back into nuetral. Got another bolt in there and it's fine now. It is definitely a clunk when shifting though. Would the pilot bearing have to do anything with this problem? I would think the sychro is messed up in 2nd?

???? I thought this was common knowledge?! This is how I and all my friends learned to drive. Do most people seriously kill it when down shifting? lol I was expecting to learn something, but in reality, I'm shocked to know that someone actually took the time to write all that out.

Mine had the clunk when up shifting into 2nd and it grinded like a biatch when down shifting into 2nd. Replaced the tranny, that fixed it!

I'm pretty sure the tranny isn't bad cause it shifts beautifully when granny shifting. I'm replacing all the oils in the car today and going to put royal purple in the tranny and see how that works.

The mount looks pretty good from yesterday when I changed all the fluids. It was dark though. I'll check again. I put the 75w90 royal purple gear oil in and so far I haven't had the clunk shifting into second. I've been driving it pretty spirited too. We'll see as time goes by.
