Cleaning Oil Coolers?

For those of you who haven't seen my other post about hoses, I am in the process of removing the beehive oil cooler on my '85 GS. I haven't gotten it all the way off yet, 'cause I was being stupid yesterday and couldn't figure out how to get it off. But after doing some reading today I've figured it out and am ready to take another stab.

Anyway, once I get it off I am wanting to clean it up nicely. Mine was leaking really badly before I bought it and the previous owner finally figured out that the o-rings were bad. Unfortunately he didn't clean up the accumulated sludge underneath it after he fixed it. I just want to clean it up really nice and put on some new clean hoses as part of the restification project. I just have no idea how to clean an oil cooler...

I was thinking about washing it off but the idea of water and soap in the oil cooler kind of scared me off. I also thought about spraying it off at the car wash, lol. Just wondered if any of you guys have cleaned yours up and if so, what you used to get them clean. I've got some serious sludge buildup on mine, and I can't take it any longer!!!

brake parts cleaner would get all the crap off, then evaporate so that there isn't any of it left.

Yea brake cleaner will work, if you have access to a parts cleaning tub that would be best. Spray carb cleaner would work too.

Bring it to a shop with a parts washer, most tranny shops have one as those parts gets quite dirty and messy. Water gets super hot with the addition of soap makes dirty parts happy They might throw it in for free!
