its attached by a cable i believe, same way as the throttle cable, to the carb, may have disconnected itself. If it pops back in when the engine warms up then its something else. check your cable connections.

The choke is controlled by a switch that is located on the back of the water pump housing. Check the wires and see if they are broken. It's a electromagnetic device that is activated and deativated by the sensor.

I currently have the same problem. The cable broke off the choke ****. A quick way to find this out is to disconnect it from the throttle and pull on it. If it comes all the way out and has frayed ends on it, you need a new cable! Doesn't seem like an easy fix to me. Lots of parts to take off to get to the back of the ****. Want a quick fix? tie a string around the throttle and pull it tight and secure it, once the car warms up pop the hood again and unsecure it. Total pain in the *** but it got me through the hellish winter weather.
