Choke kills my 12a

Is there a reason why, when I pull my choke to help my car idle on a cold start, it starts to idle really rough and tries to die on me? I have to sit there and hold the accelerator at 2000rpm until it warms up.

It probably makes things too rich by closing off the air without raising the throttle position. You need to get in there and bend the little tab up just a hair. You don't know what I'm talking about, do you. Ugh, I don't have nay pictures handy. Can someone tell this guy which tab I'm talking about? It's on the shaft, the long horizontal tab that gets pushed on by the fast idle rod. If you bend this tab up, the rod contacts it sooner and opens the throttle a little more for the same amount of choke cable pulling. Does any of that make sense?
