Talking Check out my new bling!

Hey Guys,

I just picked up a package in the mail today from Scott (trochoid) here on the forum. He wrote that awesome article on switching to the front-mount oil cooler, and I managed to get my hands on his old POWDERCOATED beehive! The thing is absolutely beautiful and just the thing I need to help clean my engine bay. I've got pics of what I've got on the car now for comparison. Most of the paint has chipped off and the tubes are kind of rusty. From the top you can still see most of the off-black and the yellow writing which makes the rest of it look just that much crappier.

wow, thats by far the nicest beehive I have ever seen. It would be nice to go for the front mount though I must admit.... The beehive just seems sooooooo obsolete.

It's the hold-over until I get my front mount. Probably going to install it in 2007 along with my rebuilt engine. Next year's project is to clean the engine bay and get the car painted. So watch for it to go on sale in 2007 when I post pics of a "bling" FMOC

Yup, it's an oil-to-water heat exchanger.

If you look at the pic from the front, the coolant comes in through the top righthand tube, swirls around inside and exits the lower lefthand tube. The oil goes through a tube pretty much right up the middle, into the filter, then back down again.

This means that you have to have a forkin' good cooling system to make up for the lack of an FMOC. If the coolant gets to hot, there's nothing to stop heat from going the other way, and there's no way the oil will cool off. It's okay for stock cars, but the reason that it's only found on the '83-85 non-SE models is because they tried it for three years and realized it sucked... so they switched back. That's why everyone wants an FMOC conversion. I will get one eventually, but at least for now this makes my engine bay look less shabby.

Thanks for the kudos. Funny thing is, I just bought 2 of that same oil filter, now those are blingy with the blue metallic paint.

Enjoy the part, powder coating is like potato chips, you can't have just one.

Looks good Jon. Now if you could just do something about that oil filler tube.
