Cheap exhaust system

I recently bought a 1984 Gsl that had been sitting for a long time and of course the exhaust system was completly rusted out. I just finished chopping it out yesterday and was wondering what you guys think will give me the biggest bang for my buck as far as exhaust stuff goes. I have read a lot about Racing Beat on this site but I don't have $600 to spend on the whole package. Any advice?

There are three kinds of exhaust system: Cheap, Quiet, and Free-flowing.

You can have any two. Cheap and Quiet - not free flowing. Cheap and free flowing - NOT QUIET. And quiet and free flowing - not cheap.

Additionally, cheap exhausts tend to be rather short lived. I put a SS muffler from a Cadillac on my '85 and I burned it out after a couple days. It was really funny though, I was on a road trip with nevarmore and I picked him up and we were both all "Wow, this is *really* quiet!" (it sounded like a sportbike was two lanes over) About 40 miles later... "Does it seem like it's getting louder to you?" 80 miles later "Yeah, it seems louder". 200 miles later we have the radio blasting and I'm wearing earplugs and asking him (nicely) to please not drive at 4000 in 2nd gear when 5th gear is much nicer given that my head was a foot from the hole in the body that the gaping holes in what was left of the muffler were aimed at...

(And it was a 500 mile day!)

The RB stuff is really an excellent VALUE. It's quiet, it flows well, and it lasts damned near forever.

here you go:
http://racingbeat.com/FRmazda1.htm
take it to a muffler shop and have them weld it up.
Or go with just their headers:
http://racingbeat.com/FRmazda1.htm
and have the muffler shop work the rest up for you.
Then go with the Magnaflow mufflers:
http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/s...ne=main&id=386

That'll all be less than 600 for ya'
I have the RB Streetport system on my car, and damn I love the sound, the flames add a nice touch too, lol.....best of luck.

Just cough up the dough for the RB unit. In the end you will spend that much on replacement mufflers and just want to kick yourself.

I wish I could cough up the dough but it just isn't there to be coughed up.

I have to disagree that the RB is the best system. Quiet due to restrictive system BUT the engine cannot breath freely, not to mention that added weight. I have tried both RB and non-RB set-ups. I prefer the louder system.

well rb is good if the car is for street. Or if you want a louder setup go with the rb system with a magnaflow straight through muffler. In my eyes don't upgrade exhaust unless you are willing to get a good system. Reading others reviews it appears that Monza and other aftermarket exhausts dont last and are a waste of money. Maybe keep your eyes peeled in the classifieds on this forum for a cheap header/test pipe or presilencer and get a magnaflow. (straight through only.)

You could go with the Racing Beat header kit where you weld it yourself (some a shop). It's considerably cheaper than the prefabbed header. Keep checking with e-bay and the classified s on this forum. You're bound to get a good deal on a used system. I did!

Bass, if you look at my post, that's exactly what I recommended too.....At least you can get the system little by little, or just the headers.
