CF headlights
I was talking to a buddy today who has 20 yards of carbon fibre and we were discussing making small, relatively inexpensive CF accent pieces (as in not hoods, those are huge and will cost $650 or so if we made 'em)
We concluded that perhaps CF headlamp covers would look cool, clearcoated to show off the distinctive CF pattern.
Question is, what would you rather have: a set of CF covers with a NACA duct on the right side, or a set of fixed headlamps (2 per side) with CF mouldings filling in the headlamp area?

whoever is making the carbon fiber hood is making CF headlights and valance also, I plan on getting them all and would rather get them all from the same guy, so they match.

Yessirree, the dual lamp sleepy eye look is very nice.
Maybe you could have the stock body coloured covers, then when it opens you've got the dual lamps surrounded in a CF trim peice. That would look cool.

The thing with the sleepy kits is, everybody talks about how they're about to make one yet no one has one on the market - all those pics I see, I email the owners and get told custom, custom, custom... then once you install them there's mods to the lifting arms, etc.
The dual lamps are used with both the fixed pods I asked about or the sleepy kit. High quality, effective lamps, @ least the ones I'm sourcing out.
For the pod version you have 2 lamps, a mounting bracket, and a valence (body colored or CF) per side
For the sleepy kit you have 3D folded metal (pricey to make in low quantities, ask me how I know) to support the headlight brackets, the hinge, and the headlight mechanism, you have 2 lamps, and a valence, Holes lining up the valence and metal substructure must be properly aligned, substructure must have all factory mounting points for the hinge, etc... I've talked to a couple of guys who said they're close to releasing one, but they mention only the valence and lights, overlooking the fact that their kit needs a metal substructure. I've seen cheap bolt ins to the factory lids but I prefer things be done right, especially with safety equipment like headlights.
Basically sleepy eyes would cost 3-4 times as much to manufacture as fixed pods, which means a finished price about 3 times higher, and double to ship.
Speaking as a person who gets deluged with emails stating something like "Nice $50 stereo bracket dude, sell me one for $7" (way below my cost of materials & metal forming), and not yet made close to my money back on the first batch of components, I can't see making a full on sleepy kit soon.
Of course, I'm only speaking for myself. And no, I'm not in the least complaining, but explaining from a financial standpoint why I chose to offer the two above for consideration instead of the sleepy kit.

I think its a Miata kit. I've seen links before, but i dont remember. It seems the miata and rx7 headlights are damn near indentical.
I would seriously like to see a picture of a finished fixed dual light on a first gen. I might be very interested if it looks good.
I'll work on that link for you.
Geoff

kewl. I know of a site that sold miata kits but the guy flatly refused to say whether it would fit in a 1st gen or not, and said in his opinion it'd take a ton of fabrication...

i started the sleepy eye kit some time ago and even with my discounts on lighting "i have a dealer license" with the added up costs people were only willing to spend less then what they would costs just to make,
even the miata kits are not cheap,
here is the link $420.00 without shrouds

you called it man,
once people put their money where there mouth is then i'll bang out a couple kits,
and another not far off subject is like the people making custom fiberglass and carbon fiber hoods,
its people like the people we are talking about that scare them off,
i would buy a fiberglass hood today if someone had one,
and i have the money in my pay-pal account as we speak.
now other people say the same thing then when you ask if they still want a hood its "blah blah no money, blah, thats pretty expensive"
or better yet
"i can make it myself for that price"
what the hell is that sentance worth anyway?
no **** sherlock but im doing all the labor "hence this is where the deal part comes in"
and its not just people here ,
im not pointing any fingers,
but when i started making gauges everyone and there mom bothered me about 79-83 gauges and i only wanted to make 84-85
so i made the other years and even both speedos and only sold i think 3 sets
know the 84-85 on the other hand did really well on ebay so it more then enough made up for it,
also i even dropped the price on the 79-83 gauges to $25.00 a set
half the original price just to get rid of them and still no bites.
thats why i wont do reverse indiglo in 79-83

there was a ton of modding to get the headlights lids to 1/2 height when they open. Bending & cutting of the actuator arms, etc. And that has to be done by the customer.
Personally I'm all for the fixed pods as it (a) looks pretty good and (b) lets you rip out all the actuators, linking arms, headlight buckets, etc and replace it all with a single bracket and moulding per side.
Might actially only save 10-15 lbs, but every li'l bit helps
