I'm not selling the kit yet, but developing the fixed one for production. I'm working with Daniel Stern on providing the lights, so you'll know they'll be effective headlamps (he's as picky as he is knowledgeable)

Hm, wow. I'm really interested, however, even w/ the phothoshop job i can't imagine what they would look like in real life.
Do you think they would go well on the rex???
Also, maybe i missed this, but Manntis, about how much do you think a set is going to cost? And what are you making them of?
Peace
Geoff

The fixed pods (as opposed to the flip-up 'sleepy' kits) I plan to make of Carbon Fibre - not that a fibreglass/body coloured one would have significant weight, but hey some of you guys replace a lightweight plastic dash piece with CF so why not?
Actually I plan to offer it in CF and Fibreglass, as I've only about 20 yards of CF for use on this project.
As to cost, the lights themselves are pricey so it won't be cheap. Daniel charges about $65 (going from memory) per light x 4 lights in the system equals $260 in hardware costs. The bucks are not yet made for the CF (as I said, this is in development - I'm still playing with a few different shapes to see what might look best on the lines of our cars) so it's tough to gauge materials/labour until the shape is finalized.

Maybe you could sell them with or without bulbs, you might be able to move more to people that can't afford the whole set all at once.
Also, I love the idea of eliminating the pop-ups, but I think if the outer light was recessed a little bit it would give a more stylish appearance, it doesn't have to be much. I'm not sure if that would compromise visibility, but I don't think it will be noticeable. Also a clear cover for the piece would be awesome (perhaps a tinted one as well).
Just shooting out ideas of what I would like to have.

I 'm looking @ having both lights forward as illustrated because that way the portion of beam cut off is a relatively unseen area of light that would normally fall in front of the bumper, concealed from the driver's view by the nose of the car (wasted light) whereas setting them farther back for style would hamper their ability to lay a low beam down to the road - it would be blocked by the very component that houses it.
Moving the low beams inboard and pulling the high beams back would solve this, but in Canada Daytime Running Lights are standard and considered a safety feature (they actually work on the prairies, and quite well, though in other areas there are arguements for and against) and having inboard low beams on makes your car look as crosseyed as a Saturn Coupe - a car I do NOT want my ReX mistaken for, if only at a distance.
As to selling them separately, Mr. Stern is a well-respected lighting specialist and has sourced out the best bulbs for this concept; were I to sell just the CF component someone might be tempted to put cheap, crappy headlights in it, then try to blame me when they have an accident - sorta like the guy who armoralled his tire treads 2 weeks ago and is trying to blame the resulting low traction accident on the tire manufacturer.

I don't see the recess really cutting down on the effectiveness. I have a '87 Monte carlo and the lights are recessed (walks out to car and measures) 1/2in. on top outer corner, 1 and 1/2 inch on bottom outer corner, 3/4 in. on top inner corner, 3 in. on bottom inner corner with the outer light 1/2in back compared to the inner light. This system uses two rectangular lights; high beams inner, low beams outer.
I would post pics, but I'm too lazy to read up on how.
Edit: After looking a little more at the photoshop job I guess the recessed look wouldn't be any better than basically straight across on the 1st gen, unless the high beam was moved forward a bit, as the fender will interfere with moving the low beam back.

What about stationary sleepy eyes? Would anyone buy them? Or would it look too much like broken pop-up headlights? If they were wired as daytime running lights that would be cool (wouldn't look strange)
I don't like the look of that style of fixed pod on the 1st gen (photoshoped pic).

I'm all for a fixed kit, get rid of that motor/linkage. To me it seems kind of pointless to make a pop up kit but maybe because that just because I'm tring to figure out a way to get rid of the whole motor/lever arm assy. It would be nice to get rid of that weight since it's in front of the front wheels and it would make more room for I/C tubing.
But something about that photoshoped pic doesn't look right, maybe it's because of the lights are too high making that little bubble above them? Id rather have a set that has that plexiglass style cover over the whole insert.
Oh yeah, is there any other bulbs you can use instead of the $$$ ones? I have a feeling that most people won't buy a headlight set that costs 1/4 of what they payed for the car.

The $$$ ones are the ones that work. Headlightsare asafety device that allow you to drive at night, but crappy lights give crappy vision and lead to crappy visits to the emergency ward.
I might consider selling just the pods, and letting the end user select their own lights, but Istrongly discourage skimping on proper lights.

That 1st Gen has pop-ups, but they look like 2nd Gen (Square) headlights. I gotta admit, they looked aweome. I tried a screen shot from the video using the "ol print screen" button - but no luck.
Maybe somebody else here will be able to post it.
