ceramics - power boost

has anyone ever heard of anybody using ceramic coatings on the rotor housings, rotor faces, and seals? if it worked, theoretically you would get a huge power increase because the energy that would normally be lost as heat into the engine block, would be kept inside the engine. however, if it worked, i dont know if the ceramic coatings would be able to take the abuse of the engine. also, you would have to have some exhaust gas constanly flowing around the intake manifold to keep it hot so the fuel would vaporize. just an interesting idea. imagine a naturally aspirated, ported 12A with close to 400hp

Ceramic Coatings have been used in Rotaries for years.
Including ceramic coated seals!

The difference in an N/A engine will be negligble, but
in a boosted Rotary, they have been known to hold well
over 40PSI safely.

n/a power increases should be far from negligable....according to a book i have, in an average rotary 22% of the energy in fuel goes to ouput hp, and 22% goes to coolant, if you gave the housings, rotors, and seals a good ceramic coating, a lot of the 22% that went to the coolant would stay inside the engine, and you should get a huge power boost. unless in the coatings you are talking about they left something out giving a way for heat to escape.

It sounds like a great idea. But I am thinking with all the rotary racing that has taken place in the last 30yrs, and the factory backed race teams of the 80's and early 90's, that someone would have thought of this before.

Now with the ceramic seals, Rob @ Pineapple racing, was telling me that, they are good for about 30lbs of torque, due to better sealing.

If you want to try it, more power to you (dumb *** pun). Its an interesting idea, and if nobody has tried it, why not??

i did some research and found several companies that do ceramic coatings on internal engine parts. however, they only showed a little over a 10hp increase in a chevy 350. i am looking with something that can resist heat a lot better than that, ill keep looking. if anyone knows of a company who has coatings that like what im looking for let me know.

I personally talked to some people from Atkins rotaries when they came down to FL for Rotorfest.. the said the ceramic coatin on the face of the rotors will cut back on carbon, not really a HP gain mod..

Email Kathy at Atkins and let us know what they say..

They did.... The 787B that won the lemans had all of its internals plasma sprayed, and was using ceramic seals.
