Cat crap!

Just wondering what effect(s) removing the catalyst in the cats would have. Any negative effects? What kind of power gain if any?

It kills Mother Earth.

Actually it is less restrictive which from my sources seems to be a good thing for the Wankel. They were severely restricted from the factory.

How comparable would this be to removing the cats and installing a pre silencer restriction wise?

Presilencers would be slightly more restrictive than a straight pipe due to the design BUT it would be more free flowing than the stock cat.

1) yes you will gain power (in stock form there's actually 3 cats)
2) it will be alot louder than stock
3) yes you will most likely fail emmisions if thats needed
4) a pre-silencer with maybe kill one or 2 ponies at the wheel, but if you love your ears you'll do it
5) any more questions and i'll be happy to anwer

By power gain it all depends on what you do, if you decided to just slap on some bigger pipping like 2.25" or so, straight to a higher flowing muffler (magnaflow are highly recommended due to their stainless steel packing, the fiberglass can melt fairly quickly in our cars because rotaries produce more heat than piston). You might gain about 5 horse power to the wheels or so.

If you decide to put on a header(racing beat recommended), expect even louder results, and go with about 2.5" piping with high flow muffler (you might want to consider 2 or if you're going with pre silencer the racing beat one is recommended here but some people do 2 mufflers one inplace of the cats wich would feature offset inlet, centered outlet would probably quiet it the most) you might see about 10-12hp increase depending on feul mod upgrades.

Yeah if you gut the cats youll gain hp. I had an 81 with gutted cats and it still ran almost silent with just the stock muffler, but when I'd get on it it would backfire and sound like a 12 gauge magnum shotgun shell going off. I loved it!

Yea, I just gutted the cats and put a small crack in the side of the main cat by accident. lol
Other then that small crack it's rather quiet! I like the sound anyhow, not much louder then before. Just gotta fold over the seem that cracked now. :/
It's not backfiring anymore then it was before I did it. Can hardly hear it anyhow.
My shutter valve broke so I already get a small amount of backfiring when coasting but it's not really noticable.
Just a temp thing till I get the RB exhaust system. lol
Thought I'd have some fun.
