Cassette player
I just got my 82 Gsl two days ago an the damn cassette player quit on me about 4 hours after I got it. has anyone ever tore one apart to try to fix it? I have a degree in electronics, but if the little motor went I doubt it's fixable. Or does anyone have one they are lookin to sell?

haha. mine had the opposite problem. the little motor wouldnt quit no matter what i did. so i cut it out cuz it was so damn annoying. but this car isnt nice enough to be kept orignal. mine came from an 81 GSL so it should be the exact same. you'll have to solder the connections to the radio cuz i literally just cut the wires. but i know the motor works lol. but even then you may just want to splice into it and take the motor and other parts you need. its just collecting dust in my garage right now. i was just gonna scrap it. ill snap some pics later today. but id be willing to let it go for the price of shipping.
i dont own a single cassette anyway

You didn't give many of the symptoms. But being one of the older guys that lived through the 8-track and cassette era, I've opened them and the typical fault is the belt breaking. Don't be afraid to open it and see if the belt is broken. That's the easiest/cheapest fix. If it's electronics, then try a truck stop, they often have people that are capable of fixing radios/CB's. It's worth a shot to have them look at it.

Cassettes?! At least it's not an 8-track. I took the cassette deck out of the radio on mine and put a CD player in its place. It fit perfectly. Although mine is an S3 so the radio is probably different. That pic is from a few years ago... I'm redoing all that right now because my car is no longer white.

It's most Lilly the belt broke or the motor quit. It was working fine then the motor just quit turning. It won't fast forward play or rewind. But when you pop in a tape it knows to switch from radio to cassette. Antenna is broke to, so I'm currently rotoring tuneless.. I have a tape deck from an s3 that works great. I could probably nab some parts out of. Cd's scratch, I have yet to scratch a tape.

I'm 26 and I remember cassettes a little too well. CD's are way more reliable if you take care of them. I recall my tapes getting eaten all the time. What a mess! I still use the tape deck in my Subaru to hook up my MP3 player. Works like a charm. So if you want to ****** a reliable tape player, head to the pull-a-part and grab one out of a late 90's Subaru.

There should be two large wheels that are part of the spindles. These have the belt run over them and the capstan, then to the motor. There may be an idler pulley in there too. I can look up the website for replacement belts if needed, but a google should provide that info in a few seconds. Pull the old belt out (noting it's routing if possible!) measure it in all 3 dimensions(cross-section might be .25" by .25" and then length could be in the range of 4 to 9 inches. Also note if it's round, rectanguler or square when you look at the cross-section of the belt.

now that i think about it, replacing a 29 year old rubber part with a 26 year old rubber part doesnt sound like a very good idea anyway, considering the belt is less than $2.00 and the idler wheel is the same.. cant wait to listen to ozzy, metallica, and anthrax again! hahaahhaa

Well, I tore it apart. One of the belts slipped off the bottom pulley of the motor and saw twisted all around it. They were both badly streched but not broken. I found a vintage radio supply store and ordered two new belts. When I get the parts I'll post a write up if one person says they want one. I'm sure most of you guys just switch to a cd player, but if someone wants to stay original with the stock radio I can show you how to fix it. It's pretty simple, also, the head, capstans, and idler wheels were horribly dirty! This thing is going to sound brand new!

I'd like to see a write up with lots o pics and links to whereever you got the
parts and part numbers and what not.
I don't play the cassettes to much because I made a cable to plug into the AUX
input which lets me use my ipod instead but I would like to be able to fix it if it
breaks.

as soon as i get the parts ill do a right up, hopefully i get them saturday. im interested in the cable you made. the deck I have has a big white plug in the back with a cap on it (not used). i guess its the same as for an old keyboard, its a six prong connector. i have an iphone, but dont really listen to the music on it. if i had such a cable that would plug right into that and work i might actually use it lol
