Carburetor problems?

Have been having an issue with my FB lately where it won't start or even fire until I pour some raw fuel straight into the carb. After that it would run great for days or weeks until the same scenario happens.

The time before I was leaving home late at night and it stalled out right down the road. Than a couple weeks later was trying to leave home for work around 6 a.m. in the freezing cold and it did the same. Started very briefly than died on me. I tried spraying starting fluid down the carb without much luck. Than went back inside the house and got my lawnmower fuel canister, poured a good amount down the carb and it wanted to start right away and ran fine after that.

Pretty sure it's something with the carburetor just wanted to hear an opinion from someone more knowledgeable about carbs.

How serious does this sound, would a simple rebuild kit fix this problem?

Thanks in advance

Check/change the fuel filter. The gas tank can get rusty and clog the filter.

Guessing you are running non-stock, and no choke? Hit up Jeff20B on this site, very knowledgeable carb person on both stock and modified carbs. Without choke I believe rotaries do not like cold weather much until warmed up.

I have owned three, 2 first gens and 1 second gen. Believe it or not, I like the first gens better; especially the 12A powered ones.

your fuel pump might be going out and aslo change/check fuel filter if both of them dont fix the problem then you would need to rebuild the carb

Sounds like a fuel delivery problem, not a carb problem. Fuel pump or filter probably.

Note: all rebuild kits contain bad parts and you usually do more harm than good. Never ever use the new needles and seats that come in these kits. The baseplate gaskets should be avoided as well.

Ok, appreciate the suggestions. The fuel filter has already been replaced, I guess will have to look at the fuel pump next before touching the carb.

Oh and it's a completely stock 12a with the choke, rats nest, etc...

Stick with us. We'll help you get it running better than stock. It'll be more fun than any modern fuel injected conveyance.

No doubt, i really like the simplicity and reliability of a carb especially on an older car like this. Definitely will be sticking with the Nikki for now.
