Carb Rebuild

Just got my GP Sorenson Carb Rebuild Kit in the mail for my Nikki. =]

Anyone done a write up for this kit?

I inspected all the parts included and it's some quality stuff. Metal washers. =]

Any tips before i tear into the carb?

I rebuilt mine awhile back- probably wouldn't have gotten it back together except for all the digital pictures I took and displayed on my laptop. Lifesaver!

Good luck!

Clear off a large table, lay down a white table cloth or sheet, and keep parts in order while disassembling on the table.... and do what David said, take lots of pictures!!

Lots of card cleaner! I usually get a couple cans per rebuild. Berrymans b-12 works good for me.
Good luck.

I rebuilt mine last week with the same kit, the kit is great because it has all aluminum washers and replacement needles, *****, and some weights I think. anyways i didnt take any pictures but I sure did download the carb manual from here:http://foxed.ca/foxed/index.php?page=rx7manual
and printed the "step by step dissasembly and assembly section" then I got small baggies and used a sharpie to label part# from the diagrams, cleaned them before I reassembled, It wasnt as hard as I thought it would be. Im sure you will do good especially with the manual. Also look at the "how to strip a Nikki down "and look at the pics and the end of the article, it helped me alot, also look up sterlings threads I think you can also get that from the 1st gen faq page!!

oh yeah, I would like to add that I got mine at AutoZone for $21.00, which i thought was a very fair price for the quality, It had two of almost every gasket, plus extra washers.

I'll look up the write-up you guys mentioned and if it's not up to snuff maybe i'll take some pics and write one myself.

What differences are there betweent the 81 carb i have and the 84 shown at the link? I know there are subtle changes but is there anything major i should be aware of?

I rebuilt the carb on the 79 day before yesterday. Didn't take pix and I still didn't have much trouble reassembling it. I didn't take everything off...just the parts that had new parts in the kit (Autozone 21.00 LOL). Wasn't as hard as I thought it would be, but I did lose a spring and had to snag one off of another Nikki I had laying around. Only problem I had was reseating the secondary barrels' butterflies. Good luck!

I've found that if there is nothing wrong with the butterflies, you should leave them alone. They're set at the factory and don't go out of adjustment.

I don't think there are major differences, but I've never rebuilt a 1981 Nikki. Download the "Mazda Carburetor Manual 1979-1985" from Kevin's site. It has a blue cover and is towards the bottom of the page. It covers each year in detail. http://www.wankel.net/~krwright/cars/rx7/manuals.html
