carb problems

I have a 85 rx7 and when I bought it the guy told me it ran until he tried to rebuild the carb? so I took the carb off and looked inside, its clean and all but when I put it all on it won't start the bowls get full and fuel leaks into the barrels so I took it off adjusted it to 16mm and 51mm following the fsm and it stills floods out and won't turn on

I'd buy a kit and rebuild it.

That's fine. Simple green and toothbrush to clean the outside, rinse well!

So I rebult the carb and gas dribbles into the primarys and when it runs the carb floods itself out so I took it off and used the old needles and same problem I adjusted the floates and the bowls still fill up over half

I'd suggest running a fuel pressure test. I had something hinky happen to mine where it ran at 15 psi. Strictly speaking you shouldn't ever really have to adjust your floats, but something is causing you needles to stay open. Did you de-bur the new one before you put them in?

Well its a stock fuel pump and the filter is new and I tried the new and old needles and still the same thing? Both the rubber tips on the needles are good and the old one's are already de burred so I'm stuck

I had a similar issue with my last 1978 carb. Mine was the needle and seats, and I know you said you've reviewed them... but I thought I did too. Mine appeared to be "fine" but it was the particular brand name of seats just not sealing up for whatever reason.

Mine did this after my first rebuild. Checked needles and seats as well as fuel pressure and nothing helped..in a last ditch effort I took the floats out and weighed them. Turns out my floats were taking on fuel. Bought new floats and no worries.

Verify that they are OEM floats. Mine had early Nikki (RX2 or REPU or something) floats in it and they were too big. It cause the bowls to run at 100% full. It turns out this is a modification for racing so when you take a corner it doesn't slosh in the bowls and create air pockets.

It honestly sounds like needles and seats though. You might have to buy a spare Nikki for parts.

ok so I think I got my problem fixed I just moved my springs on the needles sideways instead of strait and it starts fine but fuel starves so I think I need to adjust the posts a little more because there under half the picture of the airhorn I was missing that jet but I put it on and every thing works fine but until I hit the gas it stutters and feel like it doesn't get enough fuel so I'm gunna adjust them some more

Adjust the parts of the floats where the tab pushes the needle. Do it in tiny increments.

For new needles i learned the hardway. Rub them on a 3m scratch pad and put 1 drop of 3in1 oil on them and rub it down. Then install them. Also i wouldnt adjust the floats unless they look like they were tinkered with. Also is your weights installed in the carb and in the correct places with no build up around them causing them to stick? 2 of my carbs had buildup around the weights that didnt get clean after a chemical bath.
Also have someone watch your fuel bowl and primary spray while idiling and then go up slowly in rpms till it shutters to see if fuel is consistently coming out. On my last carb the ap shot plunger wedged itself sideways after a few drives causing me all kinds of problems.

The inside of the carb is clean and weights are fine no blockage and when I turn the car on and idle the sight glass shows fuel at the bottom and the spray is constant even when switching to secobdarys but when I take it that high it starves out and bogs so I think it could just be float adjustments.

Ok so it starts up fine now but when I go to drive it its smooth then starts bogging down and just fuel starves new fuel pump (stock airtex) and clean fuel filter... when it sits with the engine off the sights are at half and when I turn it on and it idles at about 1200 the sights are way below half and if I give it throttle the fuel drops in the bowls what the hell

I'll bet you a dollar your fuel pickup is filled with crud. And 91 is a waste of money. Which you'll need if you take the bet.

Ok so later today I will take the filter and pump off and check the pump to see if its clean and replace the filter and then blow the hose that goes from tank to pump? And so no 91? Because the 87 I guess is good and the 89 has a little ethanol in it
