(CARB) Car won't hold idle

So I have been having issues with my 7 lately and after checking most if not all reasons why my car is running funky (vaccum leaks, timing, etc.) I decided a carb rebuild was in order. I rebuilt it per FSM specifications and made sure to clean everything real good, could you believe how nasty and grimy it was?? Anyhoo I cleaned and rebuilt it but now my car won't keep an idle at all before it would idle but really rough. The float levels are correct or atleast they should be I haven't messed with them but no go. The car will run if I baby it with the gas pedal but once I let go of the throttle it dies immediately? Would could eye have overlooked thats causing me so much grief?? The car is a '79 with the stock nikki rats nest and all.

Also is the idle speed screw suppised to be lose when I unscrew it? Cause it seems really loose but Idk to be completly honest.

Anything that could put me on the right track to driving my baby how I used to would be much appreciated

Needles? Like the float seat and the thing that goes inside of that?

tbh eye did change the needle seats and needles at first but after reading stuff on the forums eye changed them back. Why would the needles keep my car from idling?

my car is a 1983 GS w/5 speed MT that clip is how the flot talks to the needle, when to raise and lower the needle to keep the fuel flowing smoothly. my quick fix was to take the top of the carb off and play/wiggle the needle around to unstick it and put it back together it would run just fine for a while and flood all over again, but from what I have read only a carb shop that wants to mess with RX 7 Nikkis will have the answer, rebuilding carbs on this car is my biggest headache and after hours of trying had to find a shop that would mess with them took it to them and after a couple days of tuning it worked like it came off the showroom.

Well eye understand all that and that makes perfect sense, but why wouldnt my car hold an idle based of a little clip like that? And given that my car was idling before eye took it apart and when eye took it apart it did t have the clip yanno?

fuel flow problem, make sure you have fire(spark), compression, fuel, and air, too much fuel or air your car won't run, hence why your car won't start in the auto world this is referred to as a crank no start, and until someone who knows your carb better than I do see this, there is really nothing you can do besides finding a local first gen club in AZ that will help you out under the hood. also if your car is a 83 12A with a Nikki (the only RX 7 I know about) it should have them clips. th

Okay ill add those clips in and see what happens does the float tab go over the clip or inbetween the clip and the spring?

The 79 carbs don't use the little clip. The little tang is too wide on them to use it. It will get hung up unless you remove it.

Also it runs with the choke on if that is useful information, but eye can't pull the choke out all the way or it revs to like 3 or 4k which eye dont want at a cold start smhh, if eye pull the choke out like half way it will idle at like 2k but if it drops lower than like 1700 rpm shes dies out :/

I would check for vacuum leaks first of all. If the floats are at the right level by looking in the glass and not flooding out and so forth, I would suspect a vacuum leak. Go around the carb and make sure all the hoses are hooked up right. Pull the air filter and take a lot of pics and maybe we can help id something thats not right.

Alright man, eye just changed like all the vacuum hoses so eye will check them throughly again. Would you happen to know the main vac leak spots?

I ran into the same problems you had after I rebuilt the carb. Spent a whole day diagnosing.

What I found is I had the air bleed jets backwards. They will both fit in the same spot. Pull off the top cover and pull out the FSM. Look at the jet sizes

Here is a picture for reference where I went wrong.

Hope this helps

Is this needed? Cause it broke not too long ago and I’m not sure what it does. It’s the richer solenoid right? Could eye get a new one or am we better off trying to solder it?

more pics coming soon, Eye got her to idle but she’s idling at like 1500 to 2000 with no choke so yea that’s not right. It’s way out of idle range, I’m pretty sure the throttle plate isn’t stuck open a tad bit cause it closed shut when disassembled

It looks like it s indeed the richer solenoid. Found this thread as I was curious. Many more experienced folks here can weigh in!
