Is this car worth it?
Is this car worth it?
Ok, so there's a guy selling a '83 GSL that I'm interested in. It has 113k miles and a rebuild on the engine at 70k. It has pretty decent paint and interior, and a small ding on the front bumper but that's it. It was a two owner car. The inside carpet is missing but otherwise the interior's complete. The driver seat is broken and reclines pretty far back, and there's a small tear on the driver's seat.
He's asking $700. I don't know crap about RX-7's, I'm a 240 guy. Should I pick this up? What would this car sell for?

I'd say go for it as long as it's mechanically sound. But I don't know much so you may want to get a second opinion. I just thought it was funny that I was in the same situation. For weeks I've been looking for a decent 240 for around $3000 until a found an '85 GSL for $1,600. I didn't think much of it at the time but I took a look at it yesterday and that thing is super clean. But yeah, if you're up to the task of fixing up the interior it sounds like a good deal.
Seats and carpet aren't too hard to replace, check for accident damage to the front of the frame rails, rust in the rear wheel wells under the bins behind the seats, rust in the rear wheel wells opening of the sills, condition of brakes including E brake, check radiator is in good shape, has it been driven lately?
Otherwise yeah worth it.

I would make him have the car pass emmisions before purchase. A dealer, or shop, installed oem exhaust could be near as much as the asking price. If it won't pass, splitting the cost would be a good deal.
Considering I paid $2k for my '83 GSL, I don't think I would pass up a chance to buy another one at just $700 if the engine still ran good. My good friend is a 240 guy, I admire his car, but I still think my stock GSL is more fun to drive. His is definitely faster than mine as he's upgraded several things to his car as well.
If you are just planning on buying it and then selling it though, save it for someone who is really looking for a 7 to own.
