car starts but wont idle
84 GSL-SE >The car was sitting for a very long time. I drove it for 6 hours straight to get her to her new home. Now 1 day later the car starts up but engine starts to shake and idle goes real low almost turns off. When I try to give it gas it sputters and when I give it lots of gas the engine stops shaking and it sounds fine but as soon as I let go of gas pedal the engine starts to shake again and idle goes back down eventually it shuts off.

is it idling rough and shutting off after it has reached running temperature? If not; start the engine and let it run (foot on gas or some kind of prop) till it reaches running temperature then see if it idles.

Q. My GSL-SE has idle and surging problems, how can I fix it?
A. This can be tricky but David Lane has created a page with lot's of excellent hints
on Solving GSL-SE Idle Problems Also LongDuck has added some excellent
suggestions in this GSL-SE Rough Idling Problem. Here are some other informative
threads: ...surging SE's and GSL-SE going nuts at IDLE!! and wacked idle and odd
acceleration at part-throttle Also be sure to check out the Mitchell Manual (1984 RX-7
full manual, pg 240-241) Technical Service Bulletin
The above are some of the things to look for.
I suspect if there are no vacuum leaks and the plugs and wires are in good shape that you either have some leaky injectors or the Coolant temp sensor at the back of the water pump housing is bad or has a loose connection.
2 things I always do when I get a SE.
Replace the coolant temp sensor (Napa has or can get them)
Run a can BG44k (fuel cleaner) through the tank (1/4 tank or less) or get a can of Seafoam and do the same thing.
Seafoam is inexpensive and can be found at Napa. Bg products can be found at a lot of the dealerships and most better Garages. Can of Bg runs about $23-$25 for a can.
