Car specs

I'm thinking of buying a first gen. rx7. The guy that sells it says it's a 2300cc 175hp engine, yet when I look at first gen rx7's specs, they're all 11-1300cc with ~110hp. So is it possible that there are 2300cc, 175hp first gen. rx7's?

thx

Not stock, 1979 through1983 they came with 100hp 12A's . In 1984 and 1985 they had an optional 130hp 13B....but that all depends if the engine is stock

Thats not true. Unless the car has a ford 2.3L I4 in it (deffinately not stock), its not right. But I don't think the ford 2.3 has or ever had 175 hp. So something is BS.

I just looked at my insurance companies website to run a simulation (to see how much insurance would cost me), now when I selected my type of car (rx7) I had the option to choose between a 2.3 DX (5M 2d 105hp 77Kw 2296cc) and a 2.3 SDX (5M 2d 105hp 77Kw 2296cc)

could it be a SP 12a? 1146X2 is ~2300 and many racing sacntions do it like that to calculate displacement. More than likely bogus info the guy is feeding ya.

There was (maybe still is) an ad on this site for a turbo 2.3 L Ford in a 7. That might be what you're talking about. I believe the turbo was capable of that hp rating. I'd be careful though as the 2.3 turbo was really bad about eating its turbo. Oil is the only thing that cools a turbo and the Ford 2.3 had a small oil supply and minimal oil cooling. They didn't last in the Mustangs nor T-Birds.

Forgot to mention that the 12a was capable of unreal HP. I was running 320 HP in my RX-3 and it wasn't maxed so it would hold up through the entire racing season and still be streetable. The 13b is capable of even more.

320hp in a 12a, you must have been running some major forced induction....

I don't know if they still show it, but Racing beat used to list the HP gains for various mods from intake and carbs to engine mods to headers and low flow exhaust. It's easy (but not cheap) to boost the HP in rotaries by 250-300%. They are very detuned by the factory to allow for U.S. emmissions standards. (The Aussie 12a gave more than 30HP more than the same U.S. version and the Japanese version gave even more.) It helps if you can get free labor as that is often the expensive part of adding HP. My at the time local Mazda dealer did the work and I supplied the parts. I ran their name on my car and some of their mechanics came out to play pit crew. Good PR for them and free labor for me. I gave them a half dozen plaques and trophies that we had won working together that were still on display in their showroom the last time I was there.
