car flooding?

Hello I have a question that I could not find an answer to so here goes. My name is Wally and I run a first generation rx7. Upon starting if I try to start it with no pressure on the gas pedal it will not start. I also tried the chock and it will start and then die. I then give it half a pump on the accelerater pedal and it will start but with much working the gas pedal, ftering it and trying to keep it running. Whae it starts I experiance a very large puff of white smoke comming out the tail pipe. When I finally get stabilized as I drive it the smoke starts to diminish gradually until there is just minor smoke. It clears up the futher I drive. Also when I shift it will backfirefor a whils and then clear up almost as if the gas from the flooding gets burned out. Finally the smoke dissapiers and the backfireing stops unless I run it up to 5grand or ther abouts. I have performed a cylinder pressura ckeck and all seems well and also pressure checked the cooling system and that also looked good. I do have played with the mixure adjusments at least a thousand times and no luck. I did look down the carb throat after the mazdza had been sitting overnight and found that gas was pooled in the secondairey throttle plates. The only mod I made to the vehicle was to install a electronic ign. and new colis and also the cap, wires, plugs etc. I will say yhe after the old distributer was removed a friend decided to turn the engin over making me loss my point of referance. I installed the distributer turning it a cog at a tim untill I got to the point where I could line up the timing marks. I also noticed that the primary plugs where now starting to run rich. I fell that my issue lies within the fuel circuit and have used both my manuals to no aval. I looked at Stirling but that didn't either. Your thoughts please. Thanks Wally

Sounds like stuck floats or your bowl vent is clogged or connected improperly. I'd rebuild the carburetor and go from there. I would also replace they spark plugs if you haven't already. They may be fouled.

Yeah sounds like fuel bowl vent solenoid, do a search on it. Either way that flooding needs to be fixed.

I don't want to sound lazy but I have looked everwhere and cannot find thebowl vent could you help me with this one?. I looked through the glass sites and it appears that the fuel level is as it should be. Rebuild! I have been working on autos for most of my life (61) and the hoses and connections give me nightmares. If I decide to try and rebuild it where would I purchase the kit from? Wally

ebay has decent prices on rebuild kits and core carburetors for spare parts if you need them. Just search for "rx7 Nikki carb" You'll need to make sure you get parts and kits for your exact year of RX7. There are multiple models of Nikki carbs. Just make sure you take lots of before pictures for reference on how to to put it back together since it's your first time.

Here are some references for you. Bookmark them, your going to need them someday...

This may sound kinda dumb but when I got my 12a rx7 it had a 13b fuel pump and it was doing the same thing. I switched over to a factory pump style just to find out the carb needs rebuild. Also the other pump was hard wired to keep the car running. To make a long story short check your pump connections and make sure they are hooked up also check for the correct pump to bee installed.

Thank you all for the help you have given me. The rx7 is in storage but this sounds like a project that can be done while it is in storage
