Unhappy Can't Get Starter Off! Need Tips!!

Hey Guys,

I've gone all out on the restoration project this time, because I feel like I'm finally capable of doing all the things to the Rx-7 that I want to. I know my way around the car very well, and I know if I've got questions you guys can definitely answer them for me. Here's my current plan:

*Fix rust in the rear, do all body work, and paint car
*Switch interior color from dark red to black
*Finish Auto to 5 Spd transmission swap

I'm going to do a complete color switch on the car so I've stripped out just about everything in the engine bay. The engine bay, under the hood, inside the doors, everything's getting painted. The engine is ready to pull out, and i'm leaving the automatic attached (I'm going to rent a cherry picker to pull it). The Haynes manual says take off the starter. No problem. I got the positive battery cable off, took out the 14mm bolt on the bottom. Then tried to take out the 14mm bolt that goes through the engine, through the trans, and through the starter. Some jackass torqued that thing down way more than necessary. Just so you know how tight it is, I somehow managed to round it off using a hex head craftsman socket. Tore the hell out of my arm when it rounded off too. So... How can I get that thing out of there?

I don't care about the transmission or the starter, I just don't want to hurt the engine. Can I just grind off the head of the bolt when I'm ready to crack apart the engine and trans, or is the bolt threaded into the engine? Why do I need to take the starter off to pull the engine anyway? It looks like it would come right out?? This will be my second rotary engine removal, so I'm no master but I have done it before... Any advice would be greatly appreciated here because I'm kind of in a tight spot...

If you're taking the engine and tranny out at the same time I don't see why you have to take the starter off.

I too hate that long *** bolt

dremel with a cutting blade. OR just use a smaller socket then force it in with a hammer. Take ur time as there isnt lot of room down there.

Are you using a 6pt or a 12pt socket? If your using a 12 then you NEED to get a 6, your just looking for trouble when your wrenchin hard on a bolt or nut with a 12pt. Also get an impact gun
