cant get a smooth idle?

ive been trying to get my car idleing the way it should, right now it idles at about 1000 and its not even taht smooth at 1000, when i get down to 700-800 its very rough. the exaust smells alot like a 2 cycle too, i dont know if its spose to be like that or not. is there a good rule of thumb for adjusting the idle and mixture screws?

thanks

I've never heard a rotary with exhaust before, and someone from my shop turned on his car...they tend to idle like carp when cold and with the choke on but when it settles, it idles like: thud thud thud. When my car's muffler fell off it did smell alot like a 2 cycle...

If its extremely rough, it may be a vaccuum leak...maybe someone on the forum will respond with ways to detect a vaccuum leak?
