Cancer!! Help!!

So I tore out the interior, and surpisingly everything is in pretty damn good shape. Only one thing that is gonna be an issue. As i took the drivers seat out, I find cancer, not bad cancer, just in a bad spot. Here are the pics

Does anyone know how to fix this? I dont think Its very safe to drive without the seat being bolted in. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I you haven't already I'd suggest removing some of the sound deadening tar. There were a couple spots in my car that looked alright, then I removed the tar...

what does the tar look like i dont think i have any on here, I removed the carpet and the pad underneath. I am down to the rusted metal and the yellow metal that is next to it. Funny thing is, I found a receipt in the glove box from the previous owner getting rust protection done, If I were her I woulda gotten my money back

The Rustproofing job is probably what caused the rust.

the tar is that layer of stuff that's painted the same color of the car and isn't metal.

my '83 was the same way... rust didn't look bad, then I chipped away all the tar (Iused a hammer and a chisel).. then I found LOTS more!

The factory tar's pretty hard to miss. It's fairly thick and if it's original, it should chip off in sheets if u use a flat-head screwdriver and hammer.

Is the yellow stuff spread evenly over the bottom of the floorboard? If so, it might be aftermarket rustproofing (depending on how thick it is). That stuff's fairly liquid as far as it's consistency as it is suppose to flow when applied for areas like between door panels, etc.

As far as the rust goes, chip at it with a screwdriver When u've cleaned off the tar. If the screwdriver goes right through the floorboard you'll have to cut it out and weld in some new. I had the same problem with my SE and had to replace all the metal. Sucked, but it had to be done!

If it's not too bad u can clean it up and use a rust paint called POR (paint over rust). Bonds to surface rust and turns into a rock-like hardness. VERY strong, and a real good product....but expensive! There are other similar products but this is one of the best.

The floorboard problem is common in 1st gens. Weatherstripping around doors leak, and water collects under the floormats causing the rust.....

From your pics it looks like you'll be replacing some metal. Wouldn't recommend driving without the seat properly secured.

Doesn't look like you have any of the factory sound deadening tar though.....

Tonight when I get home I will take more, better pictures and post them, maybe you can tell me what the yellow material is, I think it may be the paint you were talking about, its rock solid but not a tar and not quite metal, and if its holding my car together I dont wanna take it off.

i had a spot in the rear like that, i used a grinder with heavy grit and ground out the tar i hate that crap, it melts and stinks but if your going to be welding it you got to get rid of the tar and paint any ways so a grind is a all in one, just get alot of discs cause it will clog up alot, well good luck
