It takes gas fumes and filters them i guess. If you paint it or polish it up by using sand paper, it can look pretty good, I left mine in.

The car smells even more strongly of gas if you take it out.

hmm - i know i dont have emmissions testing but i hate the smell of exhaust with bad emmissions so i might leave it in....can some one tell me what it does and how it works - even if i remove something, i like to understand its purpose (although it is sometimes not a good one) before i launch it out of my garage.

oh ho, we have a big baby, if you don't like the smell what are you doing with an old-school rotary?

either way "iotus" was right about its function

The charcoal canister is, surprisingly, a canister filled with (you guessed it) charcoal!. The tubes that hook to it have evap'd gas and emissions going through them, and the canister helps filter them out. On SA's the Canister was located in the air cleaner cover.

If you take it out, yeah, it'll smell more like gas. I'd just leave it in and paint it like IoTus did, since taking it out doesn't really give any benefit, unless you like the smell of gas!
