Can SA/FB Drift?

I know this question might be a little stupid, but I really havn't seen any do it. Can they? Are they too skinny or don't have the right weight distribution, or CAN they drift? Is it any harder than a FC or FD? Thanks

they used to be quite the rage here in japan for 0-400, and drifting just need to get a fresh LSD with really tight cluth packs.

FB Drift...

Hi.

There's a guy at Mazdatrix that use the SA/FB for drifting. Anything is possible.

I was going to build my SA/FB into one, but the car was in such good shape, that I saved it, and got a beat up FC instead.

I guess the advantage is a stiff rear axle, smaller, and less lag (12A turbo has none). Disadvantage is the steering (SA has no rack and pinion).

As for steering angle I don't have a clue about the difference in the two.

I say, Save the SA/FB, and get a FC or something. A driftcar will be trashed, and the SA is getting harder and harder to find.

;-)

"SA/FB" - drift?

OK, I'm not too into drifting, but yes a 1st gen is a good oversteer car. Any car that has rear wheel drive can be driven in such a fashion with a bit of skill, so it has that to start with. Like most cars, the set up from the factory is biased towards understeer, and it's basically underpowered for sustaining long, lurid, smokey slides. Fortunately it is pretty easy with springs, sway bars, and tire and pressure adjustments to make a 1st gen a nice controllable slider. Power is also not a problem as there are lots of untapped ponies under the hood that a little porting will release. A street ported 1G with 190 HP, a big rear sway bar and over inflated rears is probably a lot of fun to melt tires with if you are into that kind of thing.

they drift just fine, its easy to induce oversteer, especially if you've modified the suspension. There aren't many guys out there doing it, but a few. I'm building up my project 83 GS as a drift car, so once thats done I'll try to make some vids...

Our cars are extremely easy to drift. All you do is come into a corner a little hot and jerk the wheel into the turn really fast, it'll oversteer like a champ. The problem with our cars is getting it to not oversteer into a circle.

When you do a 'true' drift, you understeer.

the problem with stock port 12a it seems is not enough torque to get the back end to come out to start the drift. I think I can't do it now because of mech. secondaries and it bogs the carb when i try to go around a corner and drift (easy fix) and also my new toyo tires grip the road like none other.

i drifted allot in my 7, but it didnt have lifited slip, so it was tough to get the back end out, but it could, when you did it right, i had mikuni carbs and full exoust though, so it was pretty torquey at 5grand. and i drift in my astrovan in the rain its about the scariest think imaginable, since its my dads, i dont want to wreck. too badly, my point is you can drift about anything even front wheel drive if your motivated enough...

It is funny to hear you say that about your astrovan. An astro, once you get used to it is great fun on wet roads, and in 2nd gear you have perfect throttle control for low speed drifts. In the 7, if the roads are wet, I have to work at "keeping" it from drifting( Well I don't work very hard at it ) The funniest thing is if you have a certain intersection that you are good at drifting around, and then you take someone with you who has no idea about what you are going to do. You never see people grab the arm rests so hard and fast.

Of course, seeing the look of shock on peoples faces when they see what they are sure is going to be a crash and then you just keep going and smoothly accelerate away... Man I love doing that. My 14 year old son and 16 year old daughter like doing it just as much as I do. [Wipes tears of happiness from eyes].

Happy drifting.

Foot Steering... or Steer by Throttle. Gotta Love it!!

Later,
Bill

lol, my astro is lsd also so it makes for a scary ride, but if you catch grip on a not totall wet road thats a scary thing,,
im surprised that you would let your kids drift... my dad would kill me, yeah everyone has thier own special corner, ive got a few, but you still gotta be carful to only do it when its really dead on the roads, some people get really mad, or go to a track... i want a track worthy 7, looking for a glsse by the way with a blown motor, im gonna build up a track machine, now that my street machine is written off,
happy driftin to all you 1st gens

When I had my astro, we replaced the stock 4.3L V6 with a 5.7L (350) V8. It was only 30 more HP but about 50 more tourque. After I annihilated the Tranny and rear end, we put in a 700R4 Automatic from a Truck and a Posi in the back.

I took it to the track on the public night and that thing drifted like crazy. Even on the streets it was wild. The suspension was worn so it was soft as heck and shifted weight like water in a cup. I hate to say it but I think I've had more fun in that van seeing what it could do than anything I've done so far in my 7.

all my buddies "drift" in their front wheel drives using their handbrakes. one night they talked me into trying to drive since im the only one with a rear wheel drive car. and im not to experienced in drifting, but i figured id give it a whirl. the first few tries werent too great, but then i got a pretty good one going and when it straightened back up it jerked sooo hard my head hit the dopr haha. it was a fun little experience. so its definately possible to drift in a first gen.

The short answer is yes, they can drift.

Peg the front camber as negative as you can. Remove the rear sway bar, and you're off to a good start. A tight diff will be a great help as well. Until someone comes out with a decent R&P, the stock box is the best unit to use. If you're still having trouble, put some older tires on the rear. I first learned to control oversteer in a bone stock '81 GSL, now I drift a V8 FB. The solid axel in an FB is actually benifitial for drifting.

Pictures are located in the "Event Pictures" section. All my videos will be up in a couple of weeks I hope, I had to take them down to turn in my finals on-line.

Here is my van:Astro350SS

It doesn't have LSD, but it is still fun. The trick in an Astro is keeping your foot on the gas through the whole drift and steer with the steering wheel. In my Rx7, the trick is to point the front wheels in the direction that I want to go and control the angle of drift with the gas pedal. If I give too much gas, she'll whip around in a 180* spin. The van is alot easier to control, surprisingly, but will only do it on wet road. The Rex will do it anytime if I push it.

Later, Bill.

I think the wildest drift car I've ever seen (Other than my Astro with a 350) was an AE86

1987 Toyota Corolla GTS AE86. It was some crazy jap driving it, but he could 4 wheel drift like crazy!

Ya Mine was straight from a late 80's Camaro Z28. We converted it to carbureted because of some issues with the stock throttle body injection. It was a direct swap except we replaced the oil pan and valve covers with chrome ones. Then we just took the front cover off the 4.3L and put it on the 350 and nobody could tell the difference at first glance, all the accesories were in the same places. It was awesome. We used the rear end out of an S10 I belive (I didnt do this part) and swaped internals with a POSI Trac Rear End. The Tranny Came out of a Chevy 1 - Ton. 700R4 4-Speed Automatic with Overdrive. Same thing was in the Van but it was the Shitty 700R4E (I think anyways.) That was some time ago when that happend.

thats a Haichiroku, its RWD and they are the kings of drifting. Haichiroku's have placed in every major drift-off event in the last 9 years.

well i CAN drift my 85 GSL-SE just fine. it all stock except a straight pipe. all i do to induce a drift is while in 2nd or 3rd depending on the space i have is let out the clutch rev it to around 6k and drop the clutch....on a stock suspension thats 20 years old no less!!! oh and it helps that my tires my dad bought for me are really pathetic Sigma Supreme HP which tire kingdom says is their highest performance tire, yeah right. wet or dry in 4th when i dump the clutch at 6k the tires screetch...not much smoke cause it takes lower than factory rated pressure to make them smoke quite a bit. at 28psi i only as much smoke or less if someone was having a cigarette...might as well have someone hanging out the hatch smoking a square, the smoker would prolly have thicker smoke...LMAO....that image would really be something to look at in a drft event...
