Can I clean a diff/carrier in a parts cleaning tub?

I'm "restoring" a GSL rear end for my project car, and have the carrier/diff out as one unit. I just wanna clean it up cause its covered in filth. but I don't wanna take the diff/pinion and all that out and have to reset the lash etc. Will that solution in the parts cleaner have any bad effects on the diff, specifically the LSD clutches? The diff is in great shape and I'd be pissed if I messed it up... TIA

sure you can dip it, just dont leavi it in too long, id be worried about the pinion seal getting eaten up by the dip......

I wouldnt worry if its mild like varsol/mineral spirits. Just rinse and dry well.

PS- Hooked on Halo2 already? I'm still playing DoD (half life) Waiting for HL2.

yeah, it should be fine. might as well replace the pinon seal while youre at it. plus you can clean out the rust from under the seal if there is any.

Halo2? Pshaw! My friends and I are playing CounterStrike2: Source

Based on HL2's engine, but it's CS. That's the only thing we'd get HL2 for anyway!

alright, I'll clean it up soon then, but Shawn, to change the pinion seal I'd have to remove the flange right? doesn't reinstalling that require setting the spacing or lash or whatever? I'd like to avoid messing with any of that since the gears have almost no wear whatsoever on them.

As for Halo 2, me and my friend were at gamestop last monday at midnight to get it the instant it was relased, we then went back to his place and were up till 5 playing coop. Geek power!!!

brakecleaner should be fine also, give it a good spray. Has anyone ever rebuilt one of these things before? I just got 2 at an auction and they're both in good shape. I'm gonna swap one in place of mine and most likely sell one and keep the old and rebuild, where do i get parts though? I spose when i pull it out i'll find out.

nah, thats only if you remove the pinion. the hardest part is getting the nut off and back on tight. when i did mine i got a 6ft or so peice of angle iron, drilled two holes on one end to put the flange bolts through, clamped the short end in the vice and left the long end for leverage. then tap the old seal out with a chisel. So, now that i think about it. it was kinda of a pain in the ***. so only do it if its leaking of is really rusty. mine was really rusty.
