Can common aftermarket air cleaners be made to work?
Can common aftermarket air cleaners be made to work?
Hey fellas,
First off, yes I am aware that racing beat offers an aftermarket air cleaner for $57. I also know that I am not interested in paying $57 for an air cleaner, when a little ingenuity goes a long way.

So here's the dilemma: I already have a K&N filter for my stock air cleaner, but I am wanting something without all the stupid tubes, snorkels, springs, and flappers all over it. Tonight I decided to tear into the stock air cleaner with my angle grinder (not my first rodeo). After about 45 minutes of battle I get done and look at it, and I think it looks absolutely ridiculous. I very neatly cut the sides out of the stock air cleaner, but it just looks too hacked up to me. I want something cleaner and simpler, and something that doesn't look like I chopped it to pieces...
I measured the OD of my K&N filter and it appears to be about 9 3/8". The height of the filter is about 2 7/8". I also put my calipers on the Nikki and it looks like a 4" air cleaner base would work. However, it appears that 4" is not a common size, specifically when perusing sites like Summit, JCWhitney, and JEGS.
I was however, able to find a couple of air cleaners that come close. Let's examine the $19.99 Mr. Gasket air cleaner....

-10" Diameter (Would work)
-2" Filter Height (A longer stud would probably fix that)
-5 1/8" Neck (@#%@!!!!!!!!)
It appears as though the only sizes these aftermarket air cleaners come in is 5 1/8" and 2 5/8". As usual, that is the size for all of the american applications, so that is all they make.
Does anybody have any bright ideas on how to match this 5 1/8" air cleaner up to a 4" Nikki carb? Thus giving me a new air cleaner without any junk hanging on it, and I can still use the K&N I already have?
Phew...Thanks in advance
Jamie

2 options. You could cut the side completely off of the base of the stock air cleaner so that it looks like the Mr Gasket one, or, find another base and a hole saw and drill a series of holes around the base.
Post a pic of what you did with your's.

What I did with mine was cut the sides off of the air cleaner except where the clips attach. That gave a good open inlet area while still retaining the stock attachment mechanism.
I don't have a pic tho...

the little 6 5/8 air cleaner i bought years ago came with a black plastic ring that adapted it down and was just right for the stock carb. don't know if u can still buy them or not, that was quite a while back.

Buy the chrome air cleaner and then get an adaptor from a speed chop to reduce the opening, you may need to modify the adaptot. Sad thing is you may only end up saving 20 bucks over the racing beat one.
