camden owners must read

Many of you know I run a camden in my bridgeported GSLSE. I have experimented with several different carbs and have found the "ideal" carb for my engine. I now run a holley 800 cfm "spreadbore" carb. The great part of the spreadbore is that it gives much better throttle response and driveability in the lower rpms due to the small primaries and screams up top due to the large secondaries. I get the best of the camdens potential with a powerband of 2500-8500 rpm. If you are running a stock or streetport, I do not suggest anything larger than 650 cfm, but still in a spreadbore though. I have run an edlebrock (which was the most streetable), a Barry Grant blower carb, holley 600 vac secondary and a 650 square flange double pumper. I do plan on testing a 650 spreadbore vac secondary holley if one falls into my lap for a good price. The 800 double pumper was a bargainfinder score for $140. This is a 1970 gm big block oe spec carb that is worth $$$$Hundreds to a restorer.

Now for the best part, the "must do" distributor modification for all camden users. I have tried going with a locked dizzy, but did not find the full upper rpm potential of the engine. I ran a stock dizzy as recommended but had to retard the timing to eliminate midrange detonation. The reason for the detonation is that the mechanical advance comes on too early for our application. Unlike a turbo car which build boost with rpm and needs more timing retard, our setup still needs mechanical advance (much like an n/a setup) since our boost remains constant. I used some very rare (outdated) ford motorsport distributor advance springs which provide a very linear rate of advance and are stiffer so the advance comes on later. Since they are stiffer they provide less total mechanical advance that stock which also aids in maintaining more initial advance for driveability, throttle response and economy. I consider this a breakthrough mod that any camden user must do. The springs I used are outdated and likely unavailable, you could substitute some aftermarket ford springs or visit one of the older speedshops and see one of the guys who have been around for a few decades like I did, or modify the stock springs.

Great! I have a distributor that seems to put out too much advance. This is going to be very helpfull. I will see if I can find stiffer springs. This could help me avoid changing the whole ignition system.

Thanks!
