There is typically a mechanism inside the switch/button housing that works like an ink pen clicker. Most likely the plastic "catch" has broken and you will need a new button. I've never replaced one of these though, so I have no advice. Maybe you could take some pictures when/if you do it so that others can see what it takes?

Luck!

You have to remove the shift surround then the stereo surround (the flat center pannel) to get to the ventalation controlls and the AC / fan control switch in question. It's not that involved. The buttons are plastic and just pull off. The switch mechanism itself is behind the dash ***** and where the problem would be. If you can diagnois the problem you may be able to fix it but used switches are not hard to come by.

OK here is a question i should have asked initially. when you take your a/c **** off and you push it does it engage/click or does it pop back out?

When you push on your center AC button, it stays depressed and the blue light comes on. The mechanism beneath the button is what is actually doing the fuctioning and should work the same regardless if the plastic button is in place or not. Thats just a cover.

I must be a bit confused about what you were describing. I don't know about earlier interiors, but on my 84 the AC is a button that you push in, and it clicks in the "down" position, and the AC comes on (with luck). Click it again and the AC turns off. I thought that was what you were describing, but from the picture above... I guess not.

The AC switch / fan speed control is the unit on the far right in your picture. It's held on by the thin jam nut. If anything is jacked, it's that one control unit and can be had seperately. The other controls pictured are for the vent routing (defroster, center vents or footwell) and the air temp.

Does that smallest brass stem on the AC switch not stay depressed when pushed? That is what has been described.

I took a couple pictures of the plunger in question. It only has about 2mm (slightly over 1/16) of travel between normal and depressed positions. If if does not stay depressed by itself, something internal to the switch is worn or broke.

That is exactly what it is. Where can I find the clicker by itself?

An AC/fan controll switch can be had from fourm members here or on eBay. You need the center push button style as opposed to the earlier and more rare "always on" version. That one has no push button center. Jim Hull from rotary restorations should have some.
