BUY INSURANCE! (it's cheap!) - (not an ad)

A member has a thread where an 8 y.o. burned his garage & car. He said he didn't have insurance 'cause he wasn't driving it.
Here's a tip: You can get insurance through Grundy & it's CHEAP! You have to meet the following criteria:
1) Must be garaged.
2) Must not be used for work transportation or errands.
3) Pics are required (send them with the application).
4) Sometimes you'll need to sign a "youthful driver exclusion". That just means you won't let any kids drive your car.
The cost is only $33 per year for (I think) $300,000 liability, & about $70 per year for collision & comprehensive on a car valued at $5,000 (stated value). You don't *have* to buy collsion, & can save about $30 without it. But for $103 per year on a lot of cars, you can have FULL COVERAGE & most important (In my opinion), you have a value set in case someone hits you & their state fart insurance wants to pay you $300 for your classic. You tell them what the car is worth, & if they agree (they will to anything reasonable) then you get full coverage for that amount. You'll have better coverage (check your current policy for a real surprise) at less cost than conventional (spell that "rip-off") policies. And, it's unlimited mileage, too!
I think these are current rates, but double-check for yourself:

I. Liability:
Includes $1,000 Medical Payments, Uninsured Motorist Coverage (statutory limit), and No Fault as required. The following premium is applied only once for all vehicles listed, annually. (Part I available only with Part II or Part III)
$100,000 - cost $30 $500,000 - cost $35
$300,000 - cost $33 $1,000,000 - cost $40 (for businesses only)

II. Comprehensive Rate Excluding Collision:
A) 25 or more years old - Cost .35/$100 of insured value.
B) Less than 25 years old - Cost .70/$100 of insured value.

III. Comprehensive Rate Including Collision:
A) Thru 1945 - Cost .55/$100 of insured value.
B) After 1945 but 25 or more years old - cost .65/$100 of insured value.
C) Less than 25 years old - cost 1.40//$100 of insured value.

It dosen't matter if the car is finished, painted, or whatever (or even running). If it's an ongoing project just tell them about it. Increase coverage as you build it. (Most of my cars are listed as "not yet painted" or something similiar. :-)
So COVER YOUR *** - & insure your car.
You can contact Grundy via their "ACCU-QUOTE HOTLINE" at 800-338-4005 or visit www.grundy.com.

Too bad their false advertisers. I've seen their ads on TV, advertising as Grundy Worldwide. Worldwide my ***, they say right in the ad that their service is available in only 48 states, NOWHERE else. I personally find them a little unreliable. Only $100 a year? Yeah right.

I would give serious consideration to doing this, but when I said something about it to my insurance agent, she told me I wouldn't be able to get an umbrella policy with my current insurance company unless all my cars were covered by them.

My mother is a Insurance agent, you should always consult your CURRENT agent before switching.

Insurance isnt to be taken lightly, Talk to your agent they can help, that is thier job.

Hell, my mom makes me have insurance on my project car that has no wheels!

not neccessarily. Grundy is a pretty popular insurance company that does have some good options. But, every situation is so different, it may not apply to a lot of people. If your car is in really good/clean shape and it has a few thousand dollars in value (to someone else, not just to you) classic/custom car policies provide excellent value. But it can't be your daily driver and you usually have to be a 'preferred' type of customer to start (clean record, etc).
But even if you can't get that type of policy, there are still lots of regular companies that will allow you to 'suspend liability' if it's not your only car. So you can still get decent physical damage coverage while it's parked in the garage.

their service is available in only 48 states, NOWHERE else
Yeah, they are US only, but there are companies in Canada that do similar things. Check 'em out.

she told me I wouldn't be able to get an umbrella
Many companies will not offer an umbrella unless they have all your coverages. However, classic car insurance is sometimes an exception. Also there are a couple of companies that do offer umbrellas over other companies coverages (http://my.rlicorp.com/Products/PUP/buy.asp). You'll pay more for the umbrella, but maybe the savings on the auto insurance would make up for it. And you may get more appropriate coverage, depending.

Grundy and Haggerty both specialize in classic car insurance. It's a niche market and can save quite a bit over the larger companies. They will also insure your car with an agreed value, not the current market value, and much cheaper than the mainstream insurers. There are restrictions though. Car cannot be a DD, must be garaged and there can be a mileage limitation. If one can meet the restrictions, it's worth looking into.

Neither Grundy nor Hagerty has restrictions on the number of miles the car may be driven. I have policy with both. Hagerty has at times expressed some misgivings about my wife's tickets--even though she is not a driver of any of the vehicles, so Grundy might be more lenient in that area. The prices are comparable, for example my 1983 RX-7 with Grundy costs $140/yr for $10,000 agreed value, full coverage, no deductibles. It includes full windshield coverage and $500 spare parts coverage. RX-7 windshields can be quite expensive, depending on the color/shade.

Didn't you just buy a house? Show your vehicles some respect and let them live inside too. Build a garage.

By the way before I built a place to store some of my cars I checked with the underwriters to ensure it met the requirements.

Typical insurance company rip-off bullshit! (and the reason I had "screwedbyinsurance.com" up for 4 years - untill I ran out of money) I would check with other companies, & don't tell them about the car(s) you're insuring through Grundy. If your current company won't insure you without those cars tell them to kiss your ***. :-)

One thing you should know about me. I don't lie, & I only bullshit in jest. (OK that's two things :-)
I have several cars & a Harley insured through Grundy full coverage at a cost of less than $600 per year. My brother has a bunch of cars insured through them, & has had them pay claims on cars that were destroyed in hurricanes on the Gulf coast (some he didn't get a chance to move - & different hurricanes/times). There was never a problem with them paying claims.
Cosmicbang: Yeah I would try to build a garage. You'll save enough in insurance to pay for it.
Mcw3: The car dosen't have to be "clean" or even in one peice. I've seen folks insure cars that were just rolling basket cases. As long as you're reasonable on the value (& you meet their requirements), they'll insure it.
It's something everyone should look into, & quit paying the insurance cartel their OUTRAGOUS PREMIUMS for their so-called "PROTECTION".

I don't think collectors insurance is bullshit. I have my 7 under American Collectors. It's insured for a $5000 agreed upon value, full coverage and glass. I do have restrictions : 3000 max miles a year, must be garage kept, anyone driving must be over 21, can only be driven as a "Sunday driver type", back and forth to meets. All these thing fit me to a tee!
Oh, on;y $110 a year.

I'd need all sorts of retaining walls and fill dirt... My hous is on a hill. Plus, I don't know how to work with that high strength 6000 PSI strength cement.

You need high strength cement to support a lift.

It's not a garage if it doesn't have a lift.

This place is being sold in 5 years anyhow. I'ma get something else.
