In bumper headlight conversions?

Recently purchased a 79 RX-7 chassis for drag racing. The pop-up headlights have been glassed over. I’d like to incorporate headlights into the bumper. Anyone does this with success? What headlights were used?

I was looking at the 90’s Honda accord headlights with built in corner signals. (Looks like below) These are 4” tall and about as narrow as I have found.

~Thanks!

You're going to have a lot of fitting those into the hefty steel front bumper of an SA.

I know it won't be easy. Thats why I was hoping someone had already done a similar setup. Thought I'd just cut it out a little on the large side and glass the rest in.

Ok at the risk of sounding like a d1ck if it's a drag car then why lights?

While being a SA owner I'd prefer to see the SA front bumber but why not go with the lighter FB, would be eaiser to cut through the plastic bumper then the stout SA? Corner light would have to do away with the sides of the SA bumper

Please don't take me wrong I like to see folks getting creative just think you wouldn't be happy with the finished product, using the SA bumper anyway

whoops just saw your response about glassing, maybe make your self a fiberglass bumber incoporating the light ... that may work all the way around

I run a street class, the car will be registered and tagged. I just purchased the chassis, and previous owner removed the headlights. I appreciate all the info I can get. I'm not very familiar with the first gens and what is or is not compatible.

Is the FB style bumper a bolt-on affair? Are they similar to the fiberglass FC bumpers? I have no problem doing that. Although cutting a bumper doesn't really seem difficult. It's already been cut in the center to allow more airflow to the rad. Doesn't look like the metal is that thick. How much weight savings is there switching to an FB bumper? I'm trying to keep this thing as light as possible.

thanks!

May be better to just keep it simple with something like this and leave the factory signals.

looks like a damn beast there, hate to ask what engine

we have a local thats running i beleive it close to a 500cid and it's tagged he used the projector style lights on his FC with the light coming out of the flash to pass openings. I guess the question is how street legit you need it. Back to weight my goal is to do fiberglass bumbers for that simple reason maintain the look (yours hides nothing thou lol) and shave weight

If it has the factory metal 1979 bumper, I'd change it out with a 1981-1985 plastic bumper.

Thanks... no engine/trans yet. Probably end up with a boosted LS1. Hoping factory hood will clear and I can ditch the huge cowl. Wheelie bars will also be removed. The car has an out of state tag so it needs to pass inspection. Thats about as far as it needs to go.

All my turbo cars get super low gears though and so far they all cruise great on the street. My FC turns 1900rpm at 50mph and runs 10.0 on a 9" tire driven to the track. (3.08 gear) Hoping this chassis will net me a solid low 9 sec pass and maintain decent street manors. It weighed 2400lbs with an iron headed SBC 400.

Before you go cutting your bumper you need to look up your local law on how far the headlights are allowed to be off the ground. How they determine if your car is too low legally is based on how far the headlights are off the ground. If u put em in your bumper to get them "street legal" your bumper is gonna have to be far enough off the ground to hit the legal limit.

Just my .02$

Thanks for the tip. Looks like KS state law is 24” minimum from the center of the headlight bulb to the ground. Also found out since the title is not salvage, I don’t need it inspected by a state trooper. Hopefully I’ll be able to get away with a bit more that way.

How I envy you guys in the non-communist states, where you don't risk getting your property confiscated for doing what you want with it.

It's nice to have an ocean and 60-deg weather in December, but the price tag is just getting to be too damned high in terms of freedoms surrendered.

I can't recall the year, but oldsmobile cutlass supremes from the late 90s had really long thin headlights. You would need the whole assembly.

Thanks... That search pointed me to these. They are the narrowest I've seen so far. Not cheap though...

ditto that, i've lived in california and florida. california is sinking itself where florida is doing just fine with itself, and when this 4 more year stint in NV is up and the kid is grown i think i'm going to push the GF to move to florida.

after living there hurricanes aren't anything you really fret over unless it is a real bad one.

Not to correct the almighty here, but that particular porsche is a 951 not a 944. (Yes correct factory designation for 944 turbo is "951") OR perhaps less than noticed S2 model, considering the car is Guards Red with phone dial wheels that puts it in the 85.5 to 89 range.

Either way, +1 for a sexy front end idea that would look amazing on an fb (if done properly)

My $0.04 =)

It's still a 944 model. badge still says 944. 944 and 951 are like SA vs FB still a rx7. if it's an s2 then it's not a 951. those lights are expensive. http://www.944online.com/cgi-bin/ASI...skukey_1000492
and there only fogs
