brought a new car - can you help with a few questions

Hey guys. I brought a series 2 RX7 with what i think is a standard 12A. What i was wondering is are these motors suppose to use oil? Mine doesn't use hardly any. Maybe 2mm on the dip stick in a month. Also the car tends to backfire and shoot flames out when i change from first to second gear when i'm getting up it a bit. Any idea why or how to stop it? Thanks guys any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated as i'm only new to this

yeh, they should use oil, im not sure on the specifics.

backfiring and shooting flames is not totally abnormal.
do you have an aftermarket exhaust.

There are a couple things you can check to make sure that your motor is using the proper amount of oil. There are two plastic lines going from the Oil Metering Pump on the front cover of the motor up over the thermostat housing and into the carburator. With the motor running, there should be oil in these lines and looking down the primary bores of the carb, some drips of oil going down into the intake. Another way to check OMP operation is to disconnect the lines and run the engine at 2000 rpm for six minutes. There should be a 2.0-2.5 ml discharge in that time. While the lines are disconnected, but sure to drip some oil down the bores of the carburator to ensure that there is no oil starvation to the apex seals. Alternately, you could use premix 2 stroke oil in your gas before you try this test. A ratio of 100:1 will ensure there is no damage to the apex seals while the OMP lines are disconnected.

The backfires and flames could be due to a couple of things. If you have an aftermarket exhaust and the Air Pump is still in operation, the fresh air being pumped into the exhaust will result in afterburn, which can be either pops or actual flames coming from the exhaust. Other than that, you could just be running rich overall, or there could be something misadjusted on the carb. I'm not an expert on that, and anything I could suggest would just be rank speculaton. What's your fuel consumption like? 15 to 19 mpg pure city driving is typical, as is 24-27 mpg on the highway.

BTW, congrats on your purchase. These cars are quite addictive to drive, they inspire a cult following, as is evidenced by the members of this board.

thanks guys. That idea about disconnecting the two plastic lines and running the motor is a good one. The car does have an aftermarket exhast. 2.5" straight through with a straight through muffler. This set up was on the car when i brought it in January. I'm not sure because basically i'm used to piston engines but one idea that i thought of is that maybe there is no back pressure. How can i check if the air pump is still in operation. Sorry guys like i said i'm new to this. Today i rang up a few places. Phils rotary's, mazfix and mazspeed. Mazfix also suggested the oil lines however mazspeed told me that for the amount i drive (250km a week roughly) and the fact i don't drive it real hard that the amount of oil is normal. Who would you guys recommend i take the car to? Once again thanks guys
