Question Broken Joint (is this bad?)

OK, when staring at the carb from the drivers side. Directly under the the air cleaner there is a 3-way T joint,. ONe of the sides is broken (side that comes from this small round box.

I was just wondering what this thing does? and is it something that i should worry about?

-Matt

Edit: THis is a 1985 GSL 12a, Fully stock

I removed the rats nest a long time ago, so I'm not quite sure I'm picturing this right, but if the tee is broken, just replace it. You can get something at any parts store.

If it's the tee I'm thinking of, one branch goes to the idle compensator and the other to a vacuum switch. In any case, you ought to replace the tee.

It's part of the vacuum system for the rats nest. When it's broken, you will have a vacuum leak, and this wil compromise engine performance and gas mileage quite a bit. I replaced mine when it broke with a generic plastic T that I bought at the car parts store (less than $1.00, as I recall), essentially the same as the original. You should probably check around for other vacuum leaks while you are at it, especially that tube that runs down behind the carb on the passenger side, near the fire wall and ending down by the exhaust manifold, this one is hard to see and it often deteriorates because of the heat, causing a significant vacuum leak.

Thanks guys! that may explain why i'm constantly getting 16mpg, while driving nicely, with majority of it highway driving.

Fixing that vacuum leak and a couple others (including the tube that runs along the passenger side firewall, which was spongy and may have been leaking at the lower joint) increased gas mileage in my 85 GSL from 16 to 23-24 mpg. The best part was the nice crisp increase in performance, gets rid of that old car sluggishness and gives the rotary the performance it's supposed to have.
