Bridgeport Turbo?!? Check out this vid!

My friend had a mildport 12a turbo that cracked an endplate, so he decided to slap the turbo on his extra bridgeport engine... CARBON APEX SEALS AND ALL.... pretty nuts huh? Anyways.. I took some video while we were cruising around yesterday, and thought i'd post them. Two different clips, both are pretty small, and be sure to right-click and 'save-as' before playing. Keep in mind, this is only ~4psi he is running.

Bridgy Turbo Clip 1

Bridgy Turbo Clip 2

i'll let him fill you in on the ultimate results later..

Nice videos...interior looks just like my car. The only thing i don't think that turbo is hi-flo enough. Didn't feel like that bridgeport was spooling up fast enough or your buddy didn't take it up far enough, maybe because of the boost.

actually... he was experiencing some hesitation problems above 8k, so he didn't take it up past that too often. The whole video is pretty long, this is just a couple short clips from it.

thanks Mschafe. It was fun while it lasted! But at lass, the turbo bridgeport is no more. It stopped working unexpectedly and not during boost. No changes were made, but ran better then it did in the video afterwards, and then apparrently broke a apex seal. It ok, it was too loud and too obnxoius to drive with all the looks and stares it recieved in public.

Also, I should point out, that I wasn't flooring it otherwise it would be about 5-6psi with the ported wastegate because it was too rich at high rpm with the too small of air bleed jets yet. I wasn't planning on running more then that boost level but not till the very end, which came too early! LOL.

Its ok, i have another engine I'm going to put in with in the next few days.

exciting leopard-- It's more likely that window media player is installed incorrectly....
Try righclick -> Save As and then open the file directly from WMP.

Damnit, I had to boot my laptop in Winblows just to see those videos, but it was worth it, hehe

nice butt hauling. that car can really benefit from shorter gears. took too long for motor to wind up. go 4.444 or 4.875

Like I said, I couldn't go to full throttle above Pennsivana 5-6000rpm or it would hesisate, from being too rich and thus let up on the throttle to about 75%of WOT and boost is obviously lower there. I did have a ignition problem, but I solved that right after that video.

Anyway, the bridgeport is well on its way out of the car as I write this. I'll have it out and dissassembled by 9pm.

Anyway, I know it would of lasted a lot longer with some kind of steel one piece seals obviously till I got it perfectly jetted. But its just as well that it happened, I was getting horrible mpg even on highway ~12mpg. I got 7mpg on a 70miles total time around a road course on saturday.

The mildport turbo got around 17-19mpg average all the time. Probably around 20-22mpg for just highway driving. I'm putting a un-mod'd 12a to get me through till I get my mildport dowl-pinned in a couple places so I can run 15psi+ and avoid cracking again hopefully.

Bridgeport + Turbo High-Boost = AWESOME
Bridgeport + Turbo LOW-Boost = A Waste of a bridge.

The big juice brodgeports around here run big turbos, big boost (over 18 PSI) and conversely - BIG POWER.

For 10PSI or less, keep it a stock port.

As I mentioned, it was not in tune yet for this damn video! YEESH!

I have a ported wastegate that limits to 5-6psi without a manual boost controler. Otherwise, again, I did NOT have it FLOORED because it hesistated from being too rich at full throttle! Hence, max boost was not going to show up at PART THROTTLE! I was going to gradually go leaner till it ran smooth, but it failed before I had the chance. AND these were carbon seals and I wasn't about to drive a FB without boost again and I had a bridgeport laying around, so what-the-hell?

FFFFEEWWWW! LOOONNG DAY! Actually long couple of days.

I took the bridgeport out of the engine yesterday, dissassembled to find a broken carbon seal, actually 5! One rotor had really broken up ones, all fractured strangely. The other rotor, all were pretty much good, one had a micro chip in it, and one looked like it was fractured in the way a stock seal and corner piece would look, and finally one that was completely good.

Today, picked up a stock 12a in a 70mile drive to pick it up, and was happy to know the previous owner ATF'd it and let it sit for like a year I think he said. THANKS a lot 82streetracer if you ever read this! This engine will get me by till auguest when I will have the mildport redone and dowled to allow 15+psi.

Finally after all the swapping of front cover with turbo oil return, and other minor parts needed for the turbo, I have a turbo'd stock 12a. And I'm VERY impressed a stock 12a is as powerful as it was with turbo blowthrough meant for a large streetport, stock overlap has surpising lowend response I'm not used to. I love ending the day with a running car after ALL THE WORK. Best of all, it idles pretty steady. However, I need to replace the crush washers for the main oil line to the rear endplate.

WackyRotary:

Oh yeah, that 12a turbo sounds nice...i hear you on the lower torque part of it. I was thinking about it also when my bridgeport started loosing compression but decided to rebuild it and totally chage all the ports, actually i'm already done. Hope to have it all ready in a few weeks, i still have some things i want to do to it. But i'm going to be using carbon apex seals this time and 3rd gen corner springs.

Still can't figure out why it was losing compression because everything looks right. Maybe a bad break in period did it.

Good luck with your new project
