Hi everyone!

I have a lot of spare time now it seems as I'm in hazmat, so I've been mulling over a few ideas. Eight months ago, led.tail_modz on instagram came out with his custom tail lights - wonderful work, really brings some nice touches to our 7's across the generations. However, I think due to a lot of 2nd and 3rd gen customer demands his time seems to be consumed by orders for those - understandable, I have no issue over that or anything in general. Shot him a message in June, he said he'd see what he could do. Drawing inspiration from his works, like his horizontal line style lights for 2nd gens, and also what CristoDaThird's carshopglow tail lights, I've been thinking of ways we could have our own updated LED tail lights.


Much like those tail lights, I was thinking (keep in mind I wanted to start off simple) three or four horizontal rows going down the assembly - on running lights, the bottom one or two will stay illuminated, and upon braking (just like the Mustang turn signals) would sequentially activate upwards, fully illuminating the tail light. Or it can be reversed, with it sequentially flowing down upon braking. But across the entire lens length, not just where it's already illuminated. Turn signals could be styled differently (keep in mind it still has to maintain the usage of indicating turns and hazards) to where it's just as functional as regular hazards, but with a little twist. Perhaps for turning, it could have a "wave effect", flowing from the back, to the side markers, to the front indicator lights. I've seen some 1st gens with Hot Water Lab's LED indicators, like pnw_rx7 has on theirs, maybe something like that can be used in conjunction with this custom setup. I was considering a vertical setup however that definitely doesn't go with the styling of the tail lights. Definitely some kind of "show" option would be cool to have at a meet.

This is just my mind running wild off of boredom but each and every day I find myself thinking of possible ideas more and more. I'm not expecting this to come into fruition anytime soon, but I just wanted to share an idea with you all, maybe some other inputs can be added in. It would most definitely have to stay within DOT specs/local laws, as I remember some of my friends getting in trouble for having flashy lights (stupidly speeding down the road with their headlights in rainbow mode ). I've seen how people custom make these, since I do nothing on base on the weekends I was thinking I could experiment a little.

Keep the horizontal, but break it up with three vertical area in such a way that it maintains what you have, but also allow them to act like the mustang turn signal and move outward. This would add flexibility and allow someone that know how to code/program the ability to add their own sequencing of the lights. I would also make it based on Arduino so it easily programmable.

This would be really cool. Watch the video from aaroncake on YouTube where he makes his own led taillights for his cosmo and prints his own board and it's also arruino based. Go for it and let us know.
