Brake booster

would a bad brake booster cause a vaccum leak bad enough for my car not to idle?

Yes. If you look at the size of the vacuum line which powers the brake booster, you'll see that it's about 1/4" ID, making for a sizeable vacuum leak which would negatively affect idle. Probably not too bad once you got some RPM, but any vacuum leak is going to cause poor running condition.
