Bought me a new project(PICS INSIDE)
I bought a 1984 Mazda RX-7
-12A (pulls hard, I think it has been rebuilt but am not sure)
-5-speed
-Suspension is gone
-Needs paint(but body if amost perfectly straight)
-161,000 miles on car itself
-Starts right up and runs extremly smooth
-tack. doesn't work, or at least most of the time(It did once on the way home)
Is this a normal problem? Simple fix anyone??????
-Can some let me know which model it is(read drums, moon roof, manual everyhting except mirrors)???
Before I bought it he spray painted the back brown, doesn't look all that bad...
Gonna get it painted once I get the suspension taken care of.
Other than some minor stuff its a really great car

The condition is so so.... There are seat covers on the seats(haven't had a chance to take them off and look) but I'm sure the seats are ripped and stuff. Over all the interior isn't that bad just kinda dusty(I am going to fix that tom when I get off work, along with cleaning the engine compartment, after I take care of some other stuff)
Paid 800.....

not too bad Kleach.. Always good to have more 1st gen guys around here...
And to answer your questions, if it's a drum brake car, it's gonna be a GS, or a GSL that someone swapped a drum rear into???

Tach is a pretty simple fix usually. The tach is hooked to one of the ignitor coils... I believe trailing. So it's either your coils (cheap at a local junkyard, most likely the problem) or it's your tach connection at the coil.
Suspension is pretty easy. I have RB springs (150USD www.racingbeat.com) and KYB GR-2 gas shocks. This seems to be a good combination that many people (myself included) like very much. It's an awesome balance between better-than-stock sport suspension, and a ride that won't damage your internal organs.
I was aiming for a suspension that I could take my g/f for a ride in, but still have awesome control on the mountain roads and autocross course. The RB springset is awesome, the upgrade motocross users make often is the Tokico blue adjustible shocks.
I'm sorry if you already know any of this, but by your avatar and your question about the tach I assumed you're a seasoned second gen owner who'se picked up this one as a project So welcome to our section dude!
First gens are alot of fun to work on. Yours doesn't have any complex computers. Depending on your budget you can do a lot, or a little, and still have lots of fun with the car. Suspension I've covered, for power you can look into having Rx7Carl/Sterling team rebuild your carb. Their rebuilt Nikkis (stock carb) flow almost as much as a Holley 465, which is also an intake option if you check racingbeat. Exhaust (as is probably the same on second gens) releases a huge amount of power, if you don't live in a province/state that has smog testing. Racing Beat is again the only name you want there.
mazdatrix is also good for harder to find parts, such as the fuel level sender I needed for my tank, and the stainless steel braided brake hoses. You probably have a Vic Brit catalogue already, that's an awesome reference too.
And you've got a GS just like me
Three models, basically: GS, GSL and GSL-SE (I've never seen a base S model in an '84-85).
GSL-SE is fuel injected, has an american bolt pattern for the rims making it easier to find aftermarket ones, and has power everything. 13b engine, highest model. Only appeared in '84-85.
GSL - 12a carbed, disc brakes all around, usually cruise and power windows as well as other accessories like a rear wiper. Limited Slip Differential (the -SE had that too). 4 x 110mm metric wheel bolt pattern, pain in the *** to find rims... ROH Snypers look Real good though.
GS- Our Model. Drum brake rear, lightest car of the three. No power nuthin', but had optional moonroof like mine. Regular differential. But when you work a GS properly, it's fun to say "My GS just beat your -SE"
Hope I didn't overstep too much here, rambling on as I do

check out your ignitor too, on the side of the distributor, when those fail so does the tach, basically when you're not gettin trailing spark the tach isn't working
im guessing it runs a little worse when the tach goes out...get the spark fixed!!!

I think 1st gens are a lot of fun. Be ware, though, the dowel pin leaks. I don't think they were as bad in the last few years of the 1st gen though.
With that high miles, you will probably have to replace a lot of hoses.
