bonez 12a intake kit vs. rx7carls insulated cold air intake
hey all
as the title says, i wanna know which is better, wats your opinion? i'm taking the car to school with me and i'm going to park it for the winter and work on it, since i have limited funds it'd probly be easier/cheaper to just chop up my intake lid rather then getting the bonez kit, but u get the idea.

Tennis, anyone
the mariah hood(s) need the extra kit to make the scoops function as a fresh/cold air intake. or vent the headlight lid and duct it to work as a fresh/cold air intake
thats what i did. works awesome.

Mariah vented headlight lid with ducting to the cold-air box:
This installation uses the NACA duct to route air through the plastic tube to the stock SE airbox, which the K&N filter can be seen if you kneel down and look up the duct. Effective, since it is completely sealed against engine bay air intake, and functions in light rain without modification. Heavy rain, I'm driving with my headlights up anyway, so the duct is then closed off and draws air from behind the raised headlight lid. Sorry the duct is hard to see in this picture - here's a view from Mariah from the front:

Nope, no problem getting air in at all - in fact, it is much less restrictive than the stock tube that ran in front of the radiator. If you look at the airbox itself, the restriction on the inlet tube is where any blocked flow would occur. I have used the stock airbox components (rubber 90 deg adapter, plastic tubing, etc.) to finish my CAI, so the path uses the same diameter components throughout, but makes a much shorter path to get from the outside to the air filter.
For comparison, I've cut the intake path before the airfilter down from 2-1/2 feet plus a 90 degree bend, to less than 8" with a fairly direct path to the top of the air filter. As stated, you can see the red K&N filter if you look up the NACA duct, which means that it's getting straight airflow when the car is underway. When idling, you can place your hand over the NACA duct and feel the air being drawn in - rev it up and you can HEAR the airflow against the filter.
I'm happy with the install, and after a year running it, have no reasons to modify it. No choking, no air starvation evidence, no indications of lean running...

Where can you get those funky cut headlight tops? Are they made, or do you have to do it custom yourself?
Jon
Edit: Forgive my newbishness.... I should have just gone to www.mariahmotorsports.com to begin with :P $145 USD though for ONE headlight cover!! I hope it comes already painted to match your car at that price!

Tennis, anyone
I vent the headlight lid(s) for $25.00 dollors each, any style vent, NACA, square drop, wide angel, and i don't need your headlight lid for core. the lids are shipped un-painted but primered. no way can i match the colour of your car(s)
my 82 has the vented light lid, and is a 12a with a stock looking air cleaner canister and uses the 'snorkel' as part of the ducting. the rest of the ducting from the 'snorkel' forward to the bulkhead is inner cooler piping. from the the front of the car looking up the light lid vent is a straight shot and the air cleaner element
can be seen. one could use PVC pipe and rubber couplers with hose clamps to create a longer snorkel for 12a cars and an -SE air box is even easier to do.
interested in a vented headlight lid, drop me a line and place an order.
i've got pictures around here somewhere........

so cold air is the way to go, would there be any real gains to using the headlight kit, as opposed to just running the intake tube out in front of the rad, besides just looking better?

Mark, please post some photos of your 12A using the headlight fresh-air intake to your snorkel. I have a 12 A, too, and very interested in the plumbing / routing. It seems that I've seen some pics of yours in the past, using chrome tubing, but your website photo links are broken.
So, when the headlight pops-up, there must be a hinge-type disconnect. Will Carl or Mark post a photo of the hinge-point with alittle more closer detail?

Mark, please send some pics of your 12A vented light-shell and snorkel-plumbing to me at cmmii@msn.com. I am very interested. Thanks!
ps. The properties on your pics on your website are all d:// Website or Photos probably need uploading. Links are calling to your local machine.
